The group emerged from the rift into the familiar yet alien terrain of their world. Gone was the fractured sky of the Realm of Echoes, and in its place, somber twilight blanketed the forest. Kaito glanced back at the portal as it closed behind them, sealing away the realm they had just left.
Did it feel different coming back?" Kaede asked, brushing a strand of hair from her face. Her voice carried a strange weight, as if she had been holding her breath since stepping through.
"It's not just a feeling," Ayame said, clutching her staff tightly. "Something has changed.
The dragon hatchling flitted from her shoulder to Kaito's, nuzzling his neck as if sensing his unease. Kaito nodded, unsheathing Kagekiri and holding it before him. The blade's glow had dimmed, but its presence felt deeper, more resonant.
"It's not just me," Kaito murmured, running his hand along the flat of the blade. "The power within the katana-it's awake now. And it feels like the world knows."
The Pursuers
Not far from the edge of the forest, an imperial scouting party had set up camp; their torches cast flickering shadows across the trees. The captain of the group-a stern woman clad in black-and-gold armor-stood near the fire, her face grim as she studied a map.
"This is where the energy surge was detected," she said, tapping a spot on the parchment. "Kagekiri was activated here, I'm certain of it."
One of her lieutenants stepped forward. "The emperor has sent reinforcements to the region, but they're days away. Should we wait?
The captain's stern look was enough. "Waiting is for the weak. We'll move now. If we can recover the blade-or the princess-before the main force arrives, the glory will be ours."
The lieutenant hesitated. "And if the Shadowcutter resists?
The captain drew her own blade, its edge gleaming with an unnatural light. "Then we cut down the wielder and bring the pieces to the emperor. The sword doesn't need him to be of use."
Powers Unveiled
Kaito and the others continued deeper into the dense forest, the atmosphere growing heavier with each step. The whispers from Kagekiri had not stopped since their return and now formed coherent words, cryptic but commanding.
"Slice the fabric," the blade murmured in his mind. "Unbind what is tied."
Kaito stopped abruptly, holding up a hand to signal the group. "Wait. I think I can feel something nearby."
What is it?" Shiro asked, his crossbow already in hand as he scanned the surroundings.
Kaito didn't answer immediately. He raised Kagekiri and focused on the pull he felt from the sword. The world seemed to slow, the edges of reality shimmering like heatwaves.
The whispers urged him forward. "Strike the unseen threads. They are your path.
Trusting the blade, Kaito swung it in a precise arc. The air before him split open, revealing a glowing tear—a glimpse into another space. Through the rift, a barren desert stretched endlessly, its sand glimmering like silver under an alien sun.
Kaede gasped. "What did you just do?"
"I… don't know," Kaito admitted, his breathing uneven. "The blade guided me. It created… this."
Ayame stepped closer, her staff glowing faintly. "This isn't just a portal. It's a tear in reality. You're wielding power over time and space itself."
The hatchling on Kaito's shoulder chirped nervously, its claws digging into his armor. Shiro peered into the rift, his face pale. "We can't stay here. If you're splitting reality open, someone—or something—is bound to notice."
On cue, if the world would have its way, heavy footsteps echoed in the woods, and then armored figures emerged from the cover of the darkness, their bright torches casting a flicker upon the gleaming helm of them all.
"Imperials," Kaede said with venom in her teeth.
A Desperate Stand
The captain of the imperial party stepped forward. Her blade sizzled with energy, while her sharp gaze latched onto Kaito's face. Her lip curled in a feral smile.
"So, the Shadowcutter shows itself at last," she said, her voice laced with mockery. "And with the princess in tow. How convenient."
Kaito stepped in front of Kaede, raising Kagekiri defensively. "If you think you're taking her—or this blade—you're mistaken."
The captain's laugh was cold. "Brave words, boy. Let's see if you can back them up."
With a burst of inhuman speed, she lunged forward; her blade clashed with Kagekiri, sending a forceful shockwave through the air that caused Kaito to clench his teeth and push back against her assault.
The rest of the group sprang into action. Shiro fired bolts into the advancing soldiers, his aim as true as ever. Ayame summoned a shield of protection, deflecting arrows and halting the enemy advance. Kaede, though still hesitant, raised her crossbow and fired; hers struck true as well.
Despite their efforts, the imperials continued to push on, their numbers overwhelming. Kaito was finding himself hard-pressed to keep at bay the captain, who struck relentlessly and with great precision.
Harness the power of the blade!" Kagekiri whispered. "Time bends to your will!"
Trusting the sword, Kaito swung it in a wide arc, focusing on the whispers. Time itself seemed to ripple outward, and the advancing soldiers froze mid-step, their movements sluggish as if caught in thick molasses.
The group stared in astonishment as Kaito turned to them. "Run. Now."
The Escape
With the imperials slowed, the group bolted through the forest, Ayame guiding them toward a hidden path she had scouted earlier. Kaito stayed close behind, the hatchling fluttering to his shoulder as they ran.
Kaede glanced back, her face pale. "How long will they stay frozen?"
"I don't know," Kaito admitted. "But it won't be forever."
Behind them, the captain's voice cut through the air, hard and angry. "You cannot run forever, Shadowcutter! The emperor's reach is endless!"
The group didn't stop running until they came to a ledge overlooking a serpentine river. Ayame paused, catching her breath as she studied the lay of the land. "We can follow the river. It'll mask our trail."
Shiro frowned. "And if they catch up?
"They won't," Kaito said, his hand clenching Kagekiri. "Not if I have anything to say about it."
Foreshadowing
As the group descended toward the riverbank, Kaede slowed her pace to walk beside Kaito. She looked at him, her eyes contemplative. "That power… it's incredible. But it's dangerous too, isn't it?"
Kaito nodded, his fingers tightening around the katana's hilt. "I can feel it. Each use, it pulls at me, like it's asking for more."
Kaede laid a gentle hand upon his shoulder. "Whatever happens, we face it together, but just promise me you won't let it consume you."
"I promise," Kaito said, though the whispers in his head made the words feel hollow.
As the group followed the river deeper into the wilderness, the air grew colder, and the forest gave way to rocky terrain. The journey was far from over, and the weight of Kagekiri's power hung heavy on Kaito's shoulders.
The path ahead was uncertain, but one thing was clear: their fight against the empire was only beginning...
