The Hargrave ultimatum hung over the Alaric estate like a storm cloud. Two days to unify the council and gather their forces, or risk splintering the alliance permanently. Time was not on their side.
Luca, Eva, and Erik prepared to leave for Valewood's archives, a place of forgotten knowledge buried deep beneath the city. If there was any information about the Conductor or the artifact, it would be there.
"Stick together," Donovan instructed, his voice stern. "The vampires have eyes everywhere, and the city is crawling with their agents. If you're spotted, get out. No heroics."
Luca nodded. "We'll be careful."
As the trio left the estate, the weight of their mission settled heavily on their shoulders.
The entrance to the archives was hidden in plain sight, a dilapidated warehouse at the edge of Valewood's merchant district. Beneath its rotting floorboards lay a maze of tunnels, once used for smuggling during the city's early days.
Eva led the way, her heightened senses guiding them through the dark, twisting passages. The air grew colder the deeper they went, the silence oppressive.
"Are we sure this place is still intact?" Erik muttered, his voice echoing softly.
"Only one way to find out," Eva replied.
After what felt like hours, they reached a massive iron door engraved with ancient symbols. Luca stepped forward, running his fingers over the carvings.
"These are wards," he said. "Meant to keep intruders out."
Eva raised an eyebrow. "Can you get us in?"
Luca closed his eyes, focusing his energy. The Alaric family's bloodline carried traces of old magic, nothing as potent as the vampires, but enough to manipulate simple wards. He muttered an incantation under his breath, and the symbols glowed faintly before fading.
The door creaked open, revealing a cavernous chamber lined with shelves. Books, scrolls, and artifacts filled the space, untouched by time.
"This is it," Eva said, her voice tinged with awe. "The archives."
They split up, each searching for any mention of the Conductor or the artifact. Hours passed as they sifted through dusty tomes and crumbling parchments. The atmosphere was tense; every creak of the shelves or distant drip of water felt like a harbinger of danger.
Finally, Luca found a journal bound in black leather. The title was faded, but the symbol on its cover—a spiral of intertwining lines—matched the one on the artifact they'd seen in the ruins.
"Eva! Erik! I think I've got something," Luca called.
The others joined him as he opened the journal, its pages filled with dense, spidery handwriting.
"The Conductor is no mere mortal. They are a vessel, chosen by forces beyond comprehension. Through them, the boundaries of life and death are blurred, and chaos becomes order. To wield their power is to command the shadows themselves."
Luca's stomach churned as he read aloud. "This isn't just a leader. It's something… otherworldly."
Eva pointed to a later passage. "Look here: 'The artifact, forged in the void, binds the Conductor's will to those who would follow. To destroy it is to sever their control.'"
"So, the artifact is the key," Erik said. "If we can destroy it, we can weaken the Conductor."
Luca nodded. "But we'll need to get close enough to do it—and that won't be easy."
As they continued reading, Erik froze, his ears twitching. "Do you hear that?"
They all fell silent, straining to listen. The faint sound of footsteps echoed through the tunnels, growing louder with each passing second.
"We've been followed," Eva hissed.
Luca slammed the journal shut. "We need to move. Now."
They extinguished their lanterns and slipped into the shadows, their werewolf senses guiding them through the dark. The footsteps multiplied, the sound of boots against stone reverberating like a drumbeat.
Erik growled softly. "Vampires."
They ducked into a side passage just as a group of figures emerged into the chamber, their pale skin and glowing eyes unmistakable. One of them carried a strange device that emitted a low hum, its vibrations cutting through the air.
"A tracker," Eva whispered. "They're hunting us."
"We'll never outrun them down here," Luca said, his mind racing. "We need to split up. They can't follow all of us."
Eva frowned. "We'll meet at the surface. Stay sharp."
The trio separated, each taking a different tunnel. Luca kept the journal clutched tightly to his chest as he navigated the maze, his heart pounding. The vampires' voices echoed faintly behind him, urging him to move faster.
He turned a corner and came face-to-face with a vampire. The creature snarled, lunging at him with inhuman speed. Luca barely managed to dodge, slamming the vampire against the wall with a burst of strength.
The fight was brutal, the confined space leaving little room for maneuvering. Luca's claws raked across the vampire's chest, but the creature was relentless.
Just as the vampire pinned him to the ground, a dagger flew through the air, embedding itself in its heart. The vampire let out a strangled gasp before collapsing into ash.
Luca looked up to see Eva, her chest heaving. "You're welcome," she said, offering him a hand.
"I thought we were splitting up," Luca said, taking her hand and standing.
"I changed my mind."
They regrouped at the surface, battered but alive. Erik emerged shortly after, his clothes torn but his expression determined.
"They know we're onto them," he said. "We need to move fast."
Luca held up the journal. "We have what we need. Now we just need to convince the council to act."
Back at the Alaric estate, Donovan listened intently as they recounted their findings. His face grew grimmer with every word.
"This journal confirms our worst fears," Donovan said. "The Conductor isn't just a threat—they're a catalyst. If we don't stop them now, Valewood will fall."
"What about the artifact?" Eva asked. "If we destroy it, we can sever their power."
Donovan nodded. "Then that's our goal. But we'll need every family's support to pull this off."
Luca stepped forward. "We'll convince them. Whatever it takes."
The next council meeting was tense, the room filled with suspicion and unease. Magnus Hargrave's impatience was palpable, but the journal's revelations left even him shaken.
"We destroy the artifact, and we destroy the Conductor's hold," Luca said, addressing the council. "But we can't do it alone. We need all of you."
For once, the room was united. The families agreed to set aside their differences and pool their resources for the battle ahead.
As the meeting adjourned, Donovan pulled Luca aside. "You've done well. But this is just the beginning. The Conductor won't go down easily."
Luca met his father's gaze. "We'll be ready."
