A STEP BACK
Nicole ignored Tyler's invitation.
She had spent the night mulling over her mother's warning, Rachel's concerns, and the shifting dynamics at play. In the end, she decided to focus on what truly mattered—Melbourne Enterprises. Tyler Winslow was a distraction she couldn't afford.
The next morning, she arrived at her office sharp and focused. Work had always been her sanctuary, and today was no different.
She gathered her executives for a strategy meeting.
"We need to reassess our partnerships," Nicole stated firmly, scanning the room. "Winslow Industries isn't the only option, and I want a full report on our alternative prospects."
Her team nodded, taking notes. They knew better than to question her authority.
As the meeting concluded, Emma walked in.
"Nicole, Tyler Winslow is here to see you."
Nicole stiffened for a fraction of a second before smoothing her expression.
"Send him in."
The office door opened, and Tyler stepped inside, his gaze unreadable.
"You ignored my call," he noted, his tone even.
Nicole leaned back, her eyes sharp. "I was busy."
"Too busy to consider what's at stake?" He arched a brow.
"No, Tyler. Just too busy to entertain impatience."
A flicker of amusement crossed his face. "Impatience? I call it efficiency."
"You and I define efficiency differently."
A charged silence settled between them. Nicole knew he wasn't used to being kept waiting, but she also knew he wouldn't leave without pressing further.
"Listen," Tyler said, stepping closer, "I'm not in the habit of making offers twice. Our deal is beneficial to both of us—stalling only gives others room to interfere."
Nicole studied him, her expression unreadable.
"And if I say I need time?"
His gaze darkened slightly, but his voice remained smooth. "Then I'd say you're playing a dangerous game, Nicole."
A slow, knowing smile curved her lips. "I play to win, Tyler. Always."
For a moment, neither of them spoke. Then, with a small smirk, Tyler straightened.
"Have it your way, then," he said. "But don't keep me waiting too long."
He turned and left, his departure as deliberate as his arrival.
Nicole exhaled softly, but she wasn't shaken. If anything, this encounter only reinforced what she already knew—Tyler Winslow was testing her.
She had no intention of failing.
Later That EveningA package arrived at Nicole's penthouse, wrapped in deep-blue velvet. Inside, a handwritten note rested on a velvet box.
"Consider this a token of our potential partnership."
Nicole opened the box. A stunning diamond necklace lay inside, gleaming under the light.
Her fingers hovered over it before pulling back.
A gesture of goodwill? Or a calculated power play?
With Tyler Winslow, nothing was ever simple.
