The beast's words echoed in the oppressive silence, each syllable sinking into Li's chest like a weight. "What will you sacrifice to move forward?"
Li's sword felt impossibly heavy in his hand, his qi reserves virtually exhausted. The abyss around him seemed to hold its breath, shadows writhing in anticipation of his answer. The towering beast before him, its crimson eyes smoldering, radiated an aura of ancient power, an unwavering reminder that this was no ordinary foe. This was the abyss's guardian, a final gatekeeper standing between Li and whatever lay beyond.
"I've already sacrificed!" Li shouted, his voice hoarse but defiant. "I've endured pain, fear, and doubt. I've fought when I had nothing left to give!"
The beast's molten gaze remained steady. "You cling to what you believe you have lost. Yet, the power in you demands more. Being the heir of the Sovereign of eternity demands all of you. The road ahead of you is one filled with adversary and hardship. Being a weakling is a disservice to the blood you carry."
"But I'm just a child" Li screamed "I need time to grow, to get stronger."
"Yes, you need to get stronger but time, you don't have" sneered the beast
Li's breath caught in his throat. The words felt like a sharp blade, cutting through his defenses. What more could he give? His body ached, his mind teetered on the edge of collapse, and his spirit had been tested to its limits.
But the gate behind the beast shimmered faintly, its light fragile and beckoning. If he turned back now, all his efforts, all his sacrifices, would be for nothing.
Li clenched his fists, his sword trembling. He took a step forward. "If you think I'm afraid, you're wrong. I'll give whatever it takes to leave this cursed place."
The beast tilted its head, an expression that might have been amusement flickering across its shadowed features. "Then prove it."
With a guttural roar, the creature surged toward Li, its massive claws slicing through the air. Li reacted instinctively, raising his sword to intercept the strike. The collision sent a shockwave rippling through the ground, cracks spreading outward as if the abyss itself were straining under the force.
The impact drove Li to his knees, his arms trembling under the sheer strength of the blow. He gritted his teeth, forcing himself to push back, the power inside him aiding him and forming a glowing shield around him. The beast's weight bore down on him, its ember eyes glowing brighter, as though feeding on his struggle but the motes of red in Li's blood pushed back. He couldn't get the upper hand but he was not pushed further back too.
"Your power protects you," the beast rumbled, its voice a low growl. "But show that you are deserving of the power else you will not open the gate."
Li's mind raced as he strained against the creature's might. What he was facing now was much more different and severe than all of the preceding trials. The beast wasn't just testing his ability to endure, it was demanding something deeper, something intangible that Li could not seem to fathom.
The creature pulled back, its claws raking through the air as it circled Li. "What will you give up to pass? Your pride? Your fear? Your past?"
Li's breath came in shallow gasps as he rose shakily to his feet, the glow receding from his body. The question echoed in his mind. Pride? Fear? Past? Does he have a past? He wondered. He tightened his grip on his sword, the runes flickering brightly as hi qi flashed and his blood pumped power to his sword. Was he holding on to something he shouldn't? Was there something within him that he hadn't yet confronted?
The beast lunged again, this time faster and more deliberate. Li barely managed to sidestep, the claws grazing his side and tearing through his tattered clothes. Pain flared, but he pushed it aside, his focus sharpening. 'i will not give up' he silently resolved.
"If you're trying to confuse me," he said through gritted teeth, "it won't work."
The beast didn't respond. Instead, it reared back, its form expanding, shadows spilling from its body like smoke. The abyss itself seemed to bend around it, the ground quaking under its presence.
"You cannot defeat me," it said, its voice resonating with finality. "Not with your blade. Not with your blood."
Li stared at the massive figure, his heart pounding. He knew the creature was right. He couldn't overpower it, not in his current state. But then… what was he supposed to do?
The Sentinel's voice, faint and distant, echoed in his mind. "The abyss will strip you bare of all pretense. Only truth will guide you forward."
Truth. Li's eyes widened as the realization struck him. The beast wasn't a test of strength, it was a test of surrender. Of acceptance.
He lowered his sword.
The beast paused, its ember eyes narrowing. "You choose to yield?"
Li shook his head. "No. I choose to let go."
Closing his eyes, he exhaled slowly, releasing the tension in his body. He thought of everything he had clung to—his fear of his power, his fear of not being able to grow strong, his fear of not being able to save his loved ones and his sect, his resentment toward Lu Heng, his desperation to prove himself to sect members like Bai Chen. These things had driven him, but they had also been weighing him down, acting as a limiting factor.
"I let go of my pride," he said softly, his voice steady. "I let go of my need for control. I let go of the fear that I'm not enough."
The runes on his sword flickered, then flared brightly, the golden light spreading outward. The oppressive weight of the abyss seemed to lift, the air growing lighter as the shadows receded.
The beast stepped back, its massive form shrinking. Its ember eyes softened, their glow dimming. "You understand," it said, its voice no longer harsh but almost… approving.
The ground beneath Li's feet steadied, and the gate behind the beast shimmered with renewed brilliance. The creature took one final step aside, bowing its head.
The beast took a step back, its massive form shrinking. Its ember eyes softened, their glow dimming as it inclined its head. "You understand," it said, its voice now calm and almost reverent. "You have faced the abyss and found balance within yourself. You have all the power you need to vanquish all opposition within you but you need control and a belief. You may pass."
Li staggered, the weight on his chest finally lifting. He turned to face the gate, its light now radiant and inviting. He hesitated for a moment, the enormity of what he had just experienced washing over him.
Then, steeling himself, he stepped forward. As he crossed the threshold, the light enveloped him, warm and soothing. The scene faded behind him, its shadows giving way to a blinding brilliance.
But as the light grew, so did the sense of foreboding. What next in this unknown space that seem to exist outside of time? He mused.
Li was sure this wasn't the end though. He knew the path ahead was still shrouded in mystery, with trials that he needed to master if he must be what he was destined to become. But whatever lay ahead, he was resolved to make it through and get out alive and ready to face all adversary.
