The golden light of the pathway faded behind Li, leaving him in an unfamiliar yet mesmerizing landscape. He stood in silence, his senses overwhelmed by the sheer potency of qi saturating the air. The ground beneath his feet shimmered faintly, and towering crystalline trees stretched toward an endless, glowing sky. The entire realm pulsed with life, each breath he took filling his body with a vigour he only felt whenever the sovereign of eternity's blood took control of him.
"This place…" he whispered, his voice carrying softly through the stillness. It felt like stepping into a living world, one that thrummed with power and a sense of purpose.
This was no ordinary sanctuary; it was the Celestial Flame Emperor's final gift, a place left behind to forge the inheritor of his treasures into an unbreakable force.
Li began to walk, his footsteps echoing faintly in the tranquil silence. Every direction offered something extraordinary—fields of glowing herbs, streams of liquid light, and pathways winding through golden forests. Each element of the sanctuary seemed designed to nurture cultivation, its very existence a testament to the Emperor's unfathomable mastery.
As he ventured further, he discovered a mountain whose surface gleamed like polished jade. Carved into its base were ornate doorways, each exuding a unique aura.
Curiosity led him to the first chamber, where floating jade tablets spiralled lazily through the air. As Li stepped inside, a wave of knowledge surged toward him. When he touched one of the tablets, its inscriptions glowed, and his mind was flooded with combat techniques—swift and deadly strikes that harnessed the elements themselves. Li looked at what seemed like thousands of jade tablets hanging and wondered if he was capable of absorbing all the knowledge in them without exploding out of qi deviation. But just as he made to touch another tablet, a force repelled him and he heard the words 'not strong enough' echoing in his head. He then retraced his steps out of the chamber.
The next chamber was stranger still, containing a pool of shimmering liquid that radiated pure energy. Its surface rippled with hues of gold and silver, and the air above it seemed to hum with life. Instinctively, Li dipped his fingers into the pool. Warmth spread through his hand and up his arm, a rush of vitality that filled him with strength and vitality.
"This must be a cultivation spring," he murmured, pulling his hand back. "Every corner of this sanctuary is a treasure."
Yet, even as he marvelled, he felt a heavy responsibility settle on his shoulders. This power was not meant for indulgence; it was a gift to forge him for the battles ahead of him, to hone him into the weapon he needed to be in order to fulfil his destiny.
As Li exited the chamber, the ground beneath him trembled. The air grew thick with energy, and a resonant growl echoed through the sanctuary. A ripple passed through the mist, parting to reveal a massive, serpentine dragon.
The creature's body shimmered between hues of fire and ice, its scales radiating power with every subtle movement. Its golden eyes, sharp and penetrating, locked onto Li.
"You are the one who has inherited this sanctuary?" the dragon rumbled, its voice deep and commanding.
Li froze, his hand instinctively moving to Frostbane's hilt. "Who are you?" he asked cautiously.
The dragon regarded him for a long moment before answering. "I am Xianlong, guardian of this sacred space. My duty is to oversee the one chosen by Tianxuan Zhi and ensure they are worthy of the power they inherit."
Li's heart raced. The Celestial Flame Emperor had not mentioned a guardian. "Worthy?" he echoed, his voice steady despite the dragon's overwhelming presence.
"Worthy," Xianlong confirmed, lowering its head until its eyes were level with Li's. "This sanctuary is not a mere gift, it is a crucible. Your strength, your resolve, and your willpower will be tested. Fail, and this power will destroy you."
Li straightened, meeting the dragon's gaze. "I won't fail. If this power can help me protect those I care about and master my blood, I'll do whatever it takes."
Xianlong let out a low chuckle, its breath like a warm wind. "Bold words. But strength is proven through action, not declarations. Come."
Xianlong led Li to a clearing at the heart of the sanctuary. The ground was etched with ancient runes that pulsed faintly, resonating with the sanctuary's qi.
"This is where your training begins," Xianlong announced. "To wield the power of the Celestial Foundation Technique, you must first refine your qi to its purest form. This will not be easy. The process will strip away impurities in your body, but the pain will test your limits."
Li nodded, lowering himself into a meditative stance. The dragon circled him, its golden eyes unblinking.
"Breathe deeply," Xianlong instructed. "Draw the qi into your core, but maintain control. Let the energy flow through your meridians, cleansing and strengthening them."
Closing his eyes, Li focused on his breathing. He reached out with his senses, pulling the dense qi from the air around him. The moment it entered his body, he felt as though molten fire was coursing through his veins. Then he felt it clash with the red motes in his blood. Pain lanced through him, sharp and unrelenting.
"Do not falter," Xianlong said, his voice steady. "The pain is a sign that impurities are being burned away. Endure it."
Li clenched his teeth, sweat dripping from his brow as he fought to maintain control. Memories of his dreams about the sovereign of eternity, gang-up against the sovereign, the sovereign's self-destruction and the sovereigns blood flowing in his veins, the abyss flashed through his mind the overwhelming darkness, the fear, and the moment he chose to let go. He drew strength from those experiences, using them as a foundation to anchor his focus.
"Aaahhhhhhhhhhhhh" he screamed. Pinpoint of pain prickled his veins from deep inside, washing him, cleansing him. The motes collided and rubbed with his qi like a washing motion, merging and becoming one.
Hours passed, though it felt like days. Gradually, the pain began to ebb, replaced by a soothing warmth. A soft golden glow emanated from Li's core, spreading through his body and filling him with a profound sense of clarity and strength.
"You have succeeded," Xianlong said, his tone neutral but not unkind. "Your foundation is stronger now, stronger than before. Yet you still need control, though."
As Li rose to his feet, his body humming with newfound energy, Xianlong led him further into the sanctuary. They arrived at a series of towering stone pillars, each engraved with intricate patterns.
"Listen," the dragon explained. "The pillars are resonant with elemental energy. To master the Celestial Foundation Technique and gain full control of your innate power, you must harmonize with these elements, fire, water, earth, wind, and lightning. Only by achieving balance can you wield and control the powers inside you."
Li approached the first pillar, its surface radiating heat. Placing his hand against it, he felt a surge of fiery energy rush into him. His vision blurred, and he found himself standing amidst a raging inferno.
The flames licked at his skin, but he remained calm, centering himself as Xianlong had taught. Slowly, he began to harmonize with the energy, guiding it through his body until it became a part of him.
The process repeated with each pillar. Water engulfed him in a cold, unyielding tide; earth tested his endurance with crushing pressure; wind buffeted him with chaotic force; and lightning sent shocks coursing through his veins.
By the time he completed the final pillar, Li's body felt as though it had been reforged. The elemental energies now resonated within him, each one balanced and harmonious.
Xianlong watched in silence as Li stepped away from the last pillar, his body glowing faintly with a multicoloured light.
"You have done well," the dragon said finally. "Your progress is remarkable, but do not let it make you complacent. The path of cultivation is long and treacherous."
Li nodded, his expression serious. "I understand. I won't relax."
Xianlong lowered its head, a faint smile in its golden eyes. "The Celestial Flame Emperor chose well. You are indeed worthy of this sanctuary. Remember, this place is your refuge, but it is also your responsibility. Use it wisely."
The dragon's form began to fade, its shimmering body dissolving into the mist. "Call on me should you need guidance. But for now, you need to practice and rest."
As Xianlong disappeared, the sanctuary grew quiet once more. Li stood in the clearing, his hand resting on Frostbane's hilt. The power of the Celestial Foundation Technique pulsed within him merging with his innate power. He felt more powerful than ever.
Li took a deep breath, pulling as much air as he could into his lungs, when it felt like he couldn't hold the breath in any longer, he threw a powerful punch at a nearby stone statue. The stone figure shattered turning into powder.
