In the evening, Lance dropped Patricia off not far from her home, not because he didn't want to keep her around, but because if she stayed, they might end up getting married soon.

Lance wasn't ready to get married yet. Of course, this wasn't to say he was irresponsible, it was just that this was the best time for career development, and other things had to give way to this aspect.
