Groggily, Elvin felt someone prodding him; just as he was about to say something, he suddenly jolted awake.
He rubbed his face and stared with wide eyes at Morris in the darkness of the night.
"A car is coming," he whispered, his voice low.
The night was very quiet. A conversation that might go unnoticed during the day would certainly be detected at night.
Elvin poked his head out and looked toward the street corner; a truck was slowly approaching.
He had visited the community hospital during the day. The doctor said through palpation that his radial bone fracture wasn't too severe. After fitting a splint, they told him it could be removed in four weeks, but a full recovery would take at least three months.
And what mattered most was that he couldn't bear weight.
This might be why the poor are so afraid of getting injured, not just because it costs money to treat the wound, but they might also lose their jobs due to the injury.
