Lance had already discussed with Vaughn the words he said to President Scott, but he was worried that Vaughn, considering some issues, would communicate them too tactfully.

The biggest problem with passing messages is this: attitudes, emotions, expressions—they can never be exactly the same.

As long as they are not exactly the same, there is potential for problems.

Some of Lance's demands—for instance, insisting on sitting on the main stage—could be conveyed by Vaughn as, "Lance hopes to sit in a more conspicuous spot," leading him to be arranged in the first row below the stage.

Such things are very likely to happen and have happened many times before in other places or on other occasions.

Vaughn found it difficult to assert these points as forcefully as Lance; his tactful attitude could easily mean miscommunication.

Therefore, Lance had to express his intentions in person.
