Chapter 27 Rescuing Little Cub

Chen Ying didn't linger on the sight of the black bear. He took the little monkey delivered by the drone and immediately started the rescue.

The little monkey was only the size of a palm, covered in lanugo hair, indicating that it was a newly born cub.

It felt ice-cold to the touch, and Chen Ying's heart sank. He held his breath and concentrated, searching for a heartbeat to see if the monkey's heart was still beating.

It seemed like a long time had passed, yet it might have only been a moment when he suddenly felt a weak beat under his fingertip.

"It's alive, still alive." Chen Ying let out a heavy sigh of relief and perked up, "Little Sen, give me a hand, shine the flashlight here, I need to give the little monkey an injection."

He didn't dare to carry the little monkey back right away, starting the rescue on the spot.

Every minute of delay would increase the monkey's probability of death by a bit.

He carried the emergency medicine with him at all times. Encountering wildlife in need of rescue in the wilderness was always possible, and they couldn't always be dragged back first.

But to be honest, this was his first time performing a rescue on such a small monkey.

Thanks to Brother Tong for his Level 100 medical skills!

At some point, the atmosphere around the river valley had changed.

The black bear had disappeared, and the stainless-steel bowl was overturned among the rocks.

The unfinished snacks were scattered on the ground, not knowing which nocturnal animal would benefit from them.

Jinya lay beside her brother, while Mr. Lepus squatted nearby with style.

In the nearby fir tree, a dozen monkeys silently watched Chen Ying perform first aid on the little monkey.

One of the monkey mothers tried several times to come down and hold her baby, but was stopped by the biggest monkey, who eventually grabbed its tail and wouldn't let it move.

Little Sen and Little Deng each held a flashlight on the little monkey.

Chen Ying kneeled on one leg, the folded jacket serving as a makeshift bed where the little monkey lay.

After the medicine was administered to the little monkey's body, a few minutes later, its chest could be visibly seen rising and falling.

"It worked, the little monkey should be out of danger now, right?"

"I don't know, we must take it back to the rescue station now and observe it in the incubator for a few days before making that call."

He sat back and wiped the sweat from his forehead.

"Brother Monkey, the little one should be okay for now, but we still need to observe it, so you can't take it away for the time being."

After all, it was too young, and it had been tossed around by the black bear. It seemed to be out of danger for the moment, but who knew what would happen next.

Jinya also made a few calls toward the monkey troop, and the leading big monkey responded with a couple of squeaks, jumped down from the tree, and slowly approached Chen Ying.

Stopping about a meter away, its beautiful face shimmered under the flashlight with a fine golden glow.

After staring at Chen Ying for about two minutes, it called out backward, and the monkey mother suddenly leaped down, reaching out her paw to touch her child.

"You can't take it away."

Little Sen got a bit anxious and shifted, causing the mother monkey to let out a sharp cry, wanting to grab the little monkey and go.

Chen Ying quickly grabbed the mother's hand, preventing her from doing so.

In her panic, the monkey mother lashed out with her other hand towards Chen Ying but was slapped squarely by the big monkey.

The big monkey stood up and scolded the monkey mother, who, cowering, curled up into a ball, her eyes brimming with tears of betrayal.

Chen Ying hurried forward to break it up.

He offered the big monkey the few snacks he had left, suggesting it share them with the others.

Then, approaching the tearful mother monkey, he reached out his hand.

"If you're worried about your baby, you can come back with me. I won't hurt it; I'm saving it. Understand?"

Combining his affinity with "animal language," Chen Ying explained gently to the monkey mother.

Seeing Monkey Mother's quasi-understanding demeanor, Chen Ying's hand reached out further.

Monkey Mother hesitated for a moment, then grabbed Chen Ying's finger with her paw, and allowed him to lead her to her child.

Chen Ying placed the little monkey in her embrace and then picked up Monkey Mother.

"We should head back to the Rescue Station first. Brother Monkey, Mr. Lepus, Jinya, do you all want to come along?"

Without waiting for their response, Chen Ying, holding Monkey Mother with the little cub, made his way to the Rescue Station.

The return journey was slower, taking almost half an hour to reach the perimeter of the Rescue Station.

Jinya wanted to continue moving forward but was stopped by her brother, who grasped the nape of her neck.

The older monkey led the rest of the young monkeys up a nearby tree and cunningly hid.

"Alright, feel free to roam. I'm going to take these two in for a check-up."

He asked Xia Sen and Little Deng to find some food for the monkey troop, knowing Jinya and her sibling hadn't to be worried about, as they knew how to hunt for themselves.

Duanmu Lin had already made preparations in advance. As soon as the little monkey returned, he coordinated with the medical team to guide Monkey Mother to place the little monkey on the examination table.

Under the light, it was clear that Monkey Mother also had many injuries, some scabs already formed, while some areas were still oozing blood.

Monkey Mother was very nervous, trembling at every rustle of grass.

Chen Ying simply sat next to her, holding her, allowing her to watch her baby as he shaved and cleaned the wound.

Wild animals have a formidable self-healing ability, so he didn't need to intervene much.

Besides, the little monkey still needed to nurse, so he couldn't medicate Monkey Mother.

The external medication chosen was the least irritating, and by morning the wounds should all scab over.

Fortunately, the little monkey hadn't fractured any bones, but due to being frightened and jostled by the Black Bear, it had a lump the size of a fingertip on its head, various bruises on its body, and even a small wound on its belly poked by a bear claw.

After cleaning, disinfecting, and medicating the little monkey, and placing it in an incubator to receive oxygen, the day's work didn't conclude until one in the morning.

Unable to nurse due to being in an incubator, and with Monkey Mother injured and shaken up, making nursing difficult,

Chen Ying decided to bottle-feed formula instead.

After consuming less than five milliliters of milk, the little monkey fell sound asleep.

Monkey Mother didn't want to leave and lay on top of the incubator, watching her child motionlessly through the transparent lid.

"You guys go rest, I'll watch them tonight."

"I should be the one who watches them, Brother Ying. You've been tired all day, go and get some sleep."

"How about we take care of them?"

Two of the night-shift members of the Panda Treatment Team volunteered.

"We have to stay here for the night watch, observing the surveillance, and we also need to monitor Mendun'er's nighttime eating and sleeping habits, so they can join us during our shift."

Chen Ying had no doubts about their professionalism, knowing that making it into the Giant Panda medical group meant they were certainly skilled. However, precisely because they always specialized in giant pandas, they might not necessarily excel in treating and caring for other animals.

Duanmu Lin stood up to usher Chen Ying away.

"Brother Ying, leave this to me. If anything comes up, I'll call you immediately. Don't worry, although I study veterinary imaging, my family runs a veterinary clinic, so I definitely have no issues with regular feeding and care."

To continue arguing would be to distrust his friends, so Chen Ying nodded, "Then I'll check on Jinya and Mr. Lepus, and if there's nothing amiss, I'll go to sleep. I'll come to relieve you at five in the morning."

As he was about to leave, he suddenly pointed at the window, "Don't close those curtains over there. Brother Monkey is standing guard outside with his brothers, and I bet they'll come to check on things during the night."

Duanmu Lin nodded, not only pulling the half-drawn curtains wide open but also switching on the small lamp on the windowsill desk.

"I'll go to the storeroom later and bring some fruits and such. If Brother Monkey and the others get hungry at night, they can have a snack."

Seeing that Duanmu Lin had things well in hand, Chen Ying felt reassured and went out to make a round, checking if Jinya and her sibling were still around and incidentally claiming the big gift bag he hadn't had time to pick up earlier.

"Brother Tong, can you explain what's happening here?"

Chen Ying's eyes went wide as he stared at the new item in the palm of his hand, completely frozen.
