New Dad

The sun cast long shadows across the dusty compound as Michael Kanu prepared to leave with Destiny and Victory. Despite the tension of the earlier conversation, a sense of resolution lingered in the air.

Lila and Amaka stood together, watching as Michael gently guided the boys toward a new chapter.Inside the house, Ayo and Prince, the younger children, peeked out from behind the doorway. The moment Michael stepped outside with Destiny and Victory, the two rushed toward him, their faces filled with excitement.“Uncle Michael!” Ayo, the little girl, called out, her braided hair bouncing as she ran. She flung her arms around his leg, looking up at him with wide, adoring eyes.“Are you going to be our daddy now?” Prince, her younger brother, asked, his voice innocent and hopeful.

Michael crouched down, his heart heavy as he placed a hand on each of their small shoulders. “No, my little ones,” he said gently. “But I’ll always be here for you, just like I’ll be there for your brothers.”Ayo’s smile faded slightly, but she nodded, trying to be brave. Prince looked at his sister, then at Michael, and simply said, “Okay.”Lila stepped forward, pulling Ayo and Prince back with a tender smile. “Go inside, children,” she said softly. “Let your uncle and brothers leave in peace.”The two younger children obeyed, though they lingered at the door, waving enthusiastically as Michael turned to Destiny and Victory.

Despite their differences, Destiny and Victory stood side by side, their expressions calm. They didn’t trust each other completely how could they, after everything that had happened? Yet, in a strange, unspoken way, they understood that they were part of the same whole. They were connected by blood, by their shared experiences, and by the fractured family they had been born into.Michael looked at them, sensing the silent bond between the boys.

“You two are stronger together,” he said with a firm but kind voice. “Whatever happens, remember that.”Destiny gave a small nod, a faint smile playing on his lips. Victory glanced at his older brother, then nodded as well.

The two women, Lila and Amaka, watched from a distance. For the first time, they shared a mutual understanding. Whatever grudges or bitterness they held toward each other, they both agreed on one thing: their sons needed a chance at a better future. As Michael led Destiny and Victory down the path, the boys walked in step, their suitcases in hand.

Ayo and Prince shouted their goodbyes from the house, their small voices carrying over the quiet yard.“Be good!” Ayo called, waving with both hands.“Come back soon!” added Prince, jumping up and down.Though Michael’s heart was heavy with the responsibility he had taken on, he felt a flicker of hope.

Destiny and Victory, despite their individual flaws and the complex circumstances of their upbringing, were still just children with the potential to grow and thrive.Lila and Amaka stood silently at the edge of the compound, watching until the group was no longer visible.

Without a word, they turned back toward the house, where Ayo and Prince waited, their young faces filled with questions and curiosity. As the journey to Onitsha began, Destiny and Victory remained quiet. They didn’t need to speak to know that, despite their differences, they were now bound by something greater than themselves. They were two halves of a single piece, and no matter what lay ahead, they would face it together.
