Chapter 80: A Date with Ding Yumian?

Magic tools are indispensable assistants for magicians.

Among various types of magic tools, wing-type and armor-type tools are the most expensive. The former allows for flight, requiring rare and specialized materials, while the latter provides full-body protection, demanding extensive resources and high production costs.

Ultimately, Lu Jun picked a shield-type magic tool after much deliberation. It could withstand the full-power attack of any Warrior-level creature, even those in their advanced stages.

Its name was Black Tortoise Shell Shield, a water-elemental magic tool that could be stacked with Water Barrier spells. It was crafted from the material of a Battle General-level sea monster called the Black Tortoise, known for its exceptional quality.

This tool was sufficient to safeguard Lu Jun within the intermediate-level realm.

Why did he choose a shield-type magic tool? The reason was simple: his circumstances had changed. As a multi-element intermediate mage, his arsenal consisted of attack, control, and support spells but lacked defensive capabilities of the same tier.

While his Water Barrier and Gold Heavy Sword were invincible against Servant-level foes, they were somewhat insufficient at the intermediate level.

The advantage of magic tools lay in their ability to be summoned instantly, often saving lives in critical moments.

Once Lu Jun advanced to the high tier, the Water Curtain Sky Screen of the Water Element would suffice for defense. Hence, his choice of a shield was based on his current stage of cultivation.

He already possessed a movement-type tool, the Azure Cloud Boots, which were more than adequate for the Servant-level and Battle Warrior-level stages.

After seeing Lu Jun make his choice, Dean Xiao smiled warmly and said, "Work hard. You have a bright future ahead of you."

"Thank you for believing in me, Dean," Lu Jun replied gratefully.

Moments later, he held a smooth, jet-black tortoiseshell in his hands. Its surface was adorned with swirling, crystalline patterns resembling whirlpools.

Unable to wait, Lu Jun immediately refined the Black Tortoise Shell Shield on the spot.

In his spiritual world, besides the four nebulae, two imprints were now visible: one of boots and one of the shield, representing his two magic tools.

Seeing this, Lu Jun felt content.

Just as he was about to leave, Dean Xiao suddenly called out, "Wait a moment. There's one more thing."

Lu Jun turned around, puzzled. "What is it?"

"It's a personal matter..." Dean Xiao hesitated briefly before speaking gently. "You're aware of Ding Yumian's secret, aren't you?"

Hearing this, Lu Jun's brow twitched, and he felt a chill run down his spine, as though he were a delinquent boyfriend meeting his girlfriend's father. It was awkward. However, he quickly shook his head, reassuring himself that he hadn't done anything to wrong Ding Yumian.

With an awkward smile, he said, "Dean, I promise to keep it confidential."

"Don't be nervous," Dean Xiao chuckled. "That girl Ding Yumian has also told me about your secret. I trust you will keep each other's secrets."

He paused and added, "I'm suggesting that you two get to know each other better."

"Huh?"

When Lu Jun left the office, he had obtained Ding Yumian's contact information. His expression was peculiar. Dean Xiao's words made it feel like he had been granted royal permission to court her.

An illusion. It must be an illusion!

However, Ding Yumian was indeed someone worth befriending. As a psychic afflicted with disaster syndrome, she was destined to become a Forbidden Curse magician in the future. She had no major troubles and kept her condition well-hidden, making her an excellent ally.

Moreover, Lu Jun knew that when his Metal Element was exposed in the future, he would inevitably clash with the Sacred City, which stood above the five major continental magic associations. Allies were invaluable.

The original timeline's outcome for Ding Yumian was too tragic. Imagine if characters like Qin Yu'er and Ding Yumian from the original series had survived and grown to their full potential. They could have rivaled archangels at the very least.

If he, Mo Fan, Mu Ningxue, Ding Yumian, and Qin Yu'er formed a team, there would be no need to compromise for humanity's safety. They could crush the Sacred City and take control themselves.

Dean Xiao probably had a similar idea. He was aging and didn't have much time left. By introducing Ding Yumian to a talented ally like Lu Jun, he could create opportunities for the future.

After some hesitation, Lu Jun recalled the Beast Fighting Tournament incident and decided to call Ding Yumian.

The phone connected quickly, and a gentle, magnetic female voice came through. "Hello? Who's this?"

Feeling a little nervous, Lu Jun hesitated before saying, "I... I'm Lu Jun. Dean Xiao introduced me to you."

As soon as he finished, he wanted to slap himself. That sounded ridiculous.

On the other end, Ding Yumian was silent for a while before letting out a soft laugh. Her voice was pleasant and melodious. "Alright, I know what this is about. Meet me at the Luckin Coffee Shop near the Pearl Academy Qing Campus."

"I haven't even apologized to you yet."

"Alright then," Lu Jun sighed. "See you at the coffee shop."

Not long after, he followed the school's navigation system and arrived at the café. Turning a corner, he saw a woman in a white dress sitting gracefully under a parasol. Her long, slender legs were elegantly crossed, and the hem of her skirt revealed glimpses of her fair skin. She exuded an air of gentle sophistication.

It was undoubtedly Ding Yumian.

Several male students at nearby tables were sneaking glances at her, some even looking eager to approach her.

"Hello," Lu Jun greeted her as he walked over.

The surrounding male students froze in fear and quickly scattered, leaving a wide-open space. His intimidating presence was fully displayed.

Before leaving, some of them cautiously snapped a photo of the two sitting face-to-face. Excitedly, they posted it on the school forum with the title: "Confirmed! Lu the Butcher and Ding Yumian Spotted on a Date!" The post quickly gained traction.

Ding Yumian, who had initially frowned slightly at the surrounding attention, smiled when she saw everyone retreating at Lu Jun's arrival.

She teased him lightly, "Your intimidation works wonders."

Lu Jun, surprised, responded with a laugh, "It still can't compete with your charm."

Both of them blushed slightly at the exchange. It was odd—this was supposed to be a simple meeting to apologize or share thoughts, but it felt more like a date.

Discussing each other's deepest secrets inherently involved baring one's soul. It was even more intimate than romantic relationships, touching upon matters of life and death.

Lu Jun sat down, took a deep breath, and transmitted his thoughts telepathically. "What's your current situation?"

Though he already knew, he couldn't reveal that. It was better to let her speak.

Ding Yumian was slightly taken aback, her beautiful eyes studying him. After some hesitation, she used telepathy to reply, "Are you familiar with disaster syndrome?"

"I understand," Lu Jun said, nodding. "So, you're a psychic disaster victim."

She smiled bitterly. "You don't seem surprised."

"I had my suspicions based on your psychic abilities," he explained.

"Aren't you afraid?" Ding Yumian's smile remained, but it seemed hollow. Deep down, she was in pain, haunted by past mistakes and the inevitable loneliness brought by her condition.

"Afraid? Afraid of what?" Lu Jun leaned on the table, his hands clasped under his chin, and spoke calmly.

Ding Yumian lowered her voice. "For example, my loss of control could easily obliterate your soul. My psychic magic is omnipotent—it could manipulate your thoughts or even read your memories. And then there's the Holy Court's Tribunal that will eventually come after me…"
