Kade leaned against the cold wall of the abandoned convenience store, listening intently to the guttural growls outside. His heart pounded in his chest, each beat echoing in his ears like a drum. Lila lay on the counter behind him, her breathing shallow but steady. The quick healing salve from the strange box had worked, but she was far from safe.
The robotic voice in his head still echoed, cold and unfeeling:
[New mission: Eliminate two Wailers nearby. Mission Completion Reward: Reinforced combat knife.]
Kade clenched his fists, feeling the weight of the pipe he carried. It was rusty and uneven, but it was the only weapon he had. He glanced at Lila. Her face was pale, and her leg wound, though closed, had left her weak.
"I need to handle this," he whispered to himself.
The world outside was chaos. Buildings reduced to rubble, streets littered with abandoned cars and corpses. Monsters had appeared out of nowhere, ripping through cities like they owned the place. The Wailers weren't the only threat, either. People had turned on each other. Kade had seen it happen—neighbors killing neighbors, desperate to survive.
The two Wailers prowled the street outside, their hunched bodies moving like predators stalking prey. Their glowing, sickly yellow eyes scanned the area, and their long claws scraped against the concrete. Kade knew he had to act before they found him and Lila.
"Okay," he muttered, trying to steady his nerves. "I can do this."
He took slow, quiet steps toward the store's shattered entrance. His grip tightened on the pipe as he peeked outside. The monsters were sniffing the air, their sharp teeth glinting in the dim light.
[Warning: Time remaining to complete the mission—00:10:00.]
A timer appeared again in the corner of his vision, the red numbers ticking down mercilessly.
Kade swallowed hard. He couldn't fail. The knife could mean the difference between life and death for him and Lila.
He darted out of the store, his footsteps light but purposeful. The closest Wailer snapped its head toward him, letting out a guttural roar. Kade didn't give it a chance to attack. He swung the pipe with all his strength, the metal colliding with the creature's head. The Wailer stumbled back, but it didn't fall.
"Damn it," Kade hissed, backing up as the second monster charged toward him.
Adrenaline surged through his veins as he ducked under its swipe, the claws missing him by inches. He lashed out with the pipe, hitting its leg and sending it toppling to the ground. But before he could finish it off, the first Wailer was on him again.
Kade felt claws rake across his arm, tearing through his jacket and grazing his skin. He bit back a cry of pain, swinging the pipe wildly. It connected with the monster's jaw, shattering teeth and sending it stumbling once more.
[Time remaining: 00:05:00.]
The timer was ticking down, and Kade's energy was draining fast. Blood dripped from his arm, and his breaths came in ragged gasps.
"I can't die here," he growled, planting his feet firmly on the ground.
The second Wailer lunged at him, and this time, Kade didn't hesitate. He brought the pipe down with all his strength, smashing its skull. The creature let out a final, agonized screech before collapsing into a lifeless heap.
One down.
The remaining Wailer snarled, its yellow eyes burning with fury. It leapt at Kade, faster than he could react. They crashed to the ground, the monster's claws tearing at his chest. Kade struggled, using the pipe to hold its snapping jaws at bay.
He gritted his teeth, forcing his body to move despite the pain. With a desperate shove, he threw the creature off him and scrambled to his feet. The Wailer charged again, but this time, Kade was ready.
He sidestepped at the last moment, swinging the pipe with pinpoint precision. It connected with the back of the Wailer's head, and the monster crumpled to the ground.
Kade didn't stop. He raised the pipe and struck again and again until the creature stopped moving.
[Mission Complete. Reward: Reinforced combat knife delivered.]
As the second monster fell, the robotic voice returned. A sleek, black knife materialized in front of him, hovering in the air before dropping into his hand. Kade stared at it, his chest heaving.
The knife felt perfectly balanced, its blade sharp and gleaming. It was a far cry from the rusty pipe he'd been relying on.
For a moment, he just stood there, catching his breath. The street was silent now, the monsters defeated. But Kade knew this was only the beginning.
He turned back toward the store, his legs trembling from exhaustion. Inside, Lila was still lying on the counter, her eyes fluttering open as he approached.
"Kade?" she whispered weakly.
"Yeah, it's me," he said, kneeling beside her. He pushed her hair out of her face and forced a smile. "I took care of it. We're safe for now."
Her lips quirked in a faint smile before her eyes slid closed again.
Kade sat down on the floor beside her, the knife still in his hand. The world outside was broken, filled with monsters and madness. He didn't know what the System was or why it had chosen him, but he knew one thing:
If he wanted to protect Lila and survive, he had to keep playing its game.
And he'd do whatever it took.
