The streets were silent again, but the air still felt charged with danger. Kade's muscles ached from the fight, but he pushed the exhaustion aside. Lila was moving more steadily now, though she still limped with each step. He kept a watchful eye on her, but the mission came first.
The signal from the Survival Beacon was growing stronger, guiding them toward their goal. Kade glanced at Lila, who was still keeping up despite her injury. She was tougher than he'd given her credit for. She might be small and injured, but she had a fire in her eyes.
"Not far now," Kade muttered, more to himself than to her. The System had led him to this place, but it didn't offer any further explanation. What was this Beacon? A trap? A safe haven?
They turned a corner and found themselves on a narrow street that had been mostly untouched by the destruction around them. The buildings here were old but still standing, their windows intact, though coated in dust.
The sound of their footsteps echoed in the stillness. Kade's hand tightened around his knife, but the only thing that greeted them was a rusted metal gate at the end of the alleyway.
"That's it," Kade said, walking toward the gate. The faint pulse of the Beacon was stronger now, almost as if it was calling him.
Lila caught up with him, her breath labored. "What is this place? It doesn't look like much."
Kade hesitated, his hand on the gate's latch. He wasn't sure what to expect, but his instincts told him to be careful.
"It's the mission," he said, his voice low. "The System says we need to activate the Beacon."
He pushed the gate open with a creak, and they stepped inside. The area beyond was a small courtyard, surrounded by high walls. In the center of the courtyard stood a tall, weathered tower with a bright, glowing orb at its peak. The Beacon.
Kade approached cautiously, his eyes scanning the area. There were no signs of movement, no creatures lurking in the shadows. Just the tower and the strange, pulsing orb.
He stepped closer, and the robotic voice filled his head again:
[Mission: Activate the Survival Beacon. Mission Completion Reward: Tier 2 Healing Kit.]
Kade reached out and placed his hand on the base of the tower. The orb flickered, and a low hum filled the air. Lila took a step back, her eyes wide.
"What's happening?" she asked, her voice tense.
"I don't know," Kade replied, his hand still on the orb. "But I think we're about to find out."
Suddenly, the orb flashed brightly, blinding them both for a moment. When Kade's vision cleared, he saw something he hadn't expected. A doorway had appeared at the base of the tower, glowing faintly with the same energy as the orb.
Before he could react, the voice in his head returned:
[Survival Beacon activated. Safe zone unlocked.]
The words echoed in his mind, but they offered no real explanation. Safe zone? What did that mean? Was this a trap?
Lila took a cautious step forward. "Do you think we should go inside?"
Kade hesitated. The mission was complete. The System had rewarded them, but he couldn't shake the feeling that something more was at play here.
"We need to find out," he said, his voice firm. "We can't turn back now."
He pushed the door open, and they entered. The inside of the tower was unlike anything Kade had expected. It was a simple, clean room with soft, glowing lights and comfortable seating. In the center of the room stood a small, metallic table with several sealed containers.
Lila's eyes widened. "This is... it's so... clean."
"Yeah," Kade said, stepping further into the room. "It doesn't feel like the rest of the world."
He approached the table and opened one of the containers. Inside was a shiny, medical kit, along with several vials of what looked like advanced healing solutions. It was far better than the basic salves they'd been using.
[Mission Reward: Tier 2 Healing Kit added.]
The voice sounded again, and Kade could feel the weight of the reward. This was better than he could've hoped for. But it wasn't enough to ease the unease gnawing at him.
"This place... why is it here?" Lila asked, her voice low. "What's the point of all this?"
Kade didn't answer right away. He had his theories, but none of them made much sense. He had a nagging feeling that they were being tested. That the System was pushing him, guiding him toward something bigger.
Before he could voice his thoughts, the voice spoke again:
[New mission unlocked: Survive the next 48 hours. Reinforcements will arrive.]
Kade frowned. Reinforcements? What did that even mean? Who else would be coming?
"We're not alone," he said, his voice distant.
Lila looked up at him, her face filled with worry. "What do you mean?"
"The System just said there will be reinforcements." He paused. "I don't know if that's a good thing or not."
They stood in the center of the room, the weight of the unknown pressing down on them. Kade couldn't shake the feeling that something much bigger was at play—something beyond just surviving the monsters and scavenging for food.
[Time remaining: 48 hours.]
The clock was ticking. They had 48 hours, but Kade had no idea what would happen when the time was up.
