Chapter Forty-Five

A wave of resignation washed over me. Fighting Lucien's plans would be futile. Instead, I would play his game, feigning happiness and excitement for the upcoming wedding. I would wear the mask of compliance, a necessary disguise to protect myself and those I cared about.

The thought of marrying Lucien filled me with dread. His manipulative nature, his thirst for power, and his disregard for life chilled me to the bone. Yet, I would endure this ordeal, this twisted charade.

"Lady Ember," the guard's voice interrupted my reverie. I had been lost in thought, watching the ducks glide across the pond when he approached. "Lord Lucien requests your presence."

Without a word, I followed the guard back into the castle. As we navigated the unfamiliar corridors, I couldn't help but feel a sense of unease. A particular staircase caught my eye, leading downward from the first floor. Is that the way to the prisons? The thought made my heart jolt with excitement.
