Chapter Eight: Shadows Stirring

The sanctuary's stillness was deceptive, masking the brewing storm outside its protective walls. As Elara lay in her small room, the events of the day replayed in her mind—the Fragment, the staff of light, and Kael's relentless training.

She stared at the pendant resting on her chest, its faint silver glow a constant reminder of what she had become. The light inside her felt alive, thrumming in tune with her heartbeat. Yet, for all its warmth, she couldn't shake the feeling of unease gnawing at her.

Her dreams were restless. Shadows moved in the corners of her mind, their glowing red eyes watching her, waiting. She saw visions of devastation—towns consumed by darkness, people screaming as the Shadows swept over them like a plague.

And then she saw him.

A figure cloaked in darkness, his face obscured by a hood. His presence was suffocating, his voice a low, chilling whisper that seemed to echo from everywhere and nowhere.

"You cannot escape your fate, Luminara. The light will fail, and the darkness will consume all."

Elara jolted awake, her chest heaving. The pendant glowed brighter for a moment, as if sensing her distress, before dimming to its usual soft light.

She swung her legs over the edge of the bed, her feet touching the cool stone floor. The sanctuary was quiet, but not entirely still. She could feel the energy pulsing through its walls, a constant hum that reminded her she was never truly alone.

A knock at the door startled her.

"Elara," Kael's voice came from the other side. "You're needed."

She opened the door to find him fully dressed, his golden eyes sharp and alert. "What's going on?" she asked, her voice still thick with sleep.

"Trouble," he said simply.

He led her through the sanctuary, his strides quick and purposeful. The air felt heavier than before, the faint glow of the walls dimming slightly.

When they reached the main hall, Elara saw another figure waiting for them—a tall woman with dark skin and piercing blue eyes. She was dressed in armor that shimmered like starlight, a sword strapped to her back.

"Elara," Kael said, gesturing to the woman. "This is Seris. She's one of the last of the Starborn."

"The Starborn?" Elara repeated, her eyes widening.

"They're allies of the Moonborn," Kael explained. "Or they were, before the Shadows decimated their numbers."

Seris inclined her head, her expression unreadable. "It seems the stories were true. The Luminara lives."

Elara shifted uncomfortably under her gaze. "I guess that's me. But I'm still figuring out what that actually means."

"There's no time for figuring it out," Seris said bluntly. "The Shadows are on the move. I encountered a pack near the northern border. They're hunting something—or someone."

Kael's jaw tightened. "They must have sensed Elara's awakening."

Elara's stomach churned. "How close are they?"

"Too close," Seris said. "And they're not alone. I saw signs of a Shadowlord."

The room seemed to grow colder.

"A Shadowlord?" Kael's voice was low, laced with tension.

"They don't usually leave their strongholds," Seris said. "But this one is different. It's leading the pack directly. They're coming for her."

Elara felt the weight of their stares, her heart pounding in her chest. "What… what's a Shadowlord?"

Kael's expression darkened. "They're commanders of the Shadows—beings of immense power. If one is coming for you, it means the darkness sees you as a threat."

Seris crossed her arms. "We need to act now. If they reach the sanctuary, we won't be able to hold them off for long."

Kael nodded, his gaze shifting to Elara. "We'll need to move. The sanctuary is safe for now, but it won't withstand an attack from a Shadowlord. There's another haven farther south. We'll head there."

Elara's mind raced. "You're saying we have to run?"

"For now," Kael said. "You're not ready to face them, Elara. Not yet."

The words stung, but she couldn't argue. The memory of her encounter with the Shadows in the woods was still fresh, and the thought of facing something even more powerful was terrifying.

Seris placed a hand on the hilt of her sword. "We'll need to move fast. The Shadows are relentless, and they won't stop until they have her—or destroy her."

Kael placed a reassuring hand on Elara's shoulder. "You'll be safe with us. Trust me."

She nodded, swallowing her fear. "Okay. Let's go."
