The forest thinned as Kael, Seris, and Elara pushed forward, the air growing cooler with the first hints of dawn. The horizon was streaked with pale light, but the faint beauty of the sunrise did little to ease the tension in Elara's chest.
She adjusted the pack on her shoulders, glancing back at the dense Veilwood they were leaving behind. "Where do we go now?"
Kael didn't pause as he answered, his tone brisk. "To the Whispering Cliffs. It's the safest route to the hidden Moonborn archives."
"The archives?" Elara asked.
Seris nodded, her expression grim. "They're more than just old books. The archives are said to hold secrets of the light—knowledge that could help you unlock your full potential."
Elara frowned. "If it's so important, why hasn't anyone already used it to fight the Shadows?"
"Because no one's been able to reach it for centuries," Kael explained. "The archives are hidden, protected by wards and illusions that only a true Luminara can bypass."
Elara's heart sank. "So it's up to me again."
"You're not alone," Kael reminded her. "We're with you."
They continued in silence for a while, the landscape shifting from forest to rolling hills dotted with jagged rocks. The air grew colder as they ascended, the wind carrying a faint, mournful sound.
Elara hugged her cloak tighter around her shoulders. "Why are they called the Whispering Cliffs?"
"You'll hear it soon enough," Seris said, her voice low.
The answer came sooner than Elara expected. As they crested a hill, the cliffs came into view—towering, jagged formations that loomed over a deep, mist-filled gorge. The wind howled through the rocks, creating a sound that was eerily like voices whispering.
Elara shivered. "That's unsettling."
Kael nodded. "The cliffs are treacherous, but they're also a natural barrier. The Shadows can't navigate the winds or the illusions that surround the gorge."
"Which means we'll have to," Seris added dryly.
As they approached the edge of the cliffs, Kael stopped abruptly, his body tense. He raised a hand, signaling for silence.
"What is it?" Elara whispered.
Kael sniffed the air, his golden eyes narrowing. "We're being followed."
Elara's heart raced. "Shadows?"
"No," Seris said, her hand resting on her sword. "Humans again."
Kael's expression darkened. "The bounty hunters must have sent word ahead."
Before Elara could respond, an arrow whizzed past her, burying itself in the ground at her feet. She let out a startled cry, and Kael pulled her behind a boulder.
"Take cover!" he barked.
Seris was already in motion, her sword flashing as she deflected another arrow. "There's too many of them to fight in the open!"
Kael glanced at the cliffs. "We'll use the winds to our advantage. Stay close to the edge—they won't risk following us there."
Elara's stomach churned at the thought of being so close to the precipice, but she nodded, gripping her staff tightly.
The group moved quickly, hugging the rocky edge of the cliffs as arrows continued to rain down around them. The winds grew stronger, tugging at their clothes and making it difficult to keep their balance.
Elara stumbled, her foot slipping on loose gravel. Kael caught her arm, steadying her before she could fall.
"Careful," he said, his voice taut with urgency.
They pressed on, the howling wind drowning out the shouts of their pursuers. The path grew narrower, forcing them to move in single file.
Seris glanced back at Elara. "Can you use your light to create a barrier? It doesn't have to last long—just enough to give us some breathing room."
Elara hesitated, her grip tightening on her staff. "I'll try."
She stopped and turned, raising the staff. The pendant on her chest pulsed, and a faint shimmer of silver light appeared in the air behind them. It wasn't much, but it seemed to slow the bounty hunters, their arrows deflecting harmlessly off the barrier.
Kael and Seris both nodded in approval. "Good," Kael said. "Now let's keep moving."
As they neared a particularly narrow section of the path, the whispers in the wind grew louder, almost deafening. Elara paused, her head tilting as she listened.
"Elara!" Kael's voice snapped her out of her trance.
"What?" she asked, blinking.
"You stopped," he said, his tone sharp. "Don't listen to the whispers—they're illusions meant to confuse you."
"I wasn't—" Elara began, but she stopped herself. She had been listening, and for a moment, the voices had sounded familiar.
"I'm fine," she said quickly, hurrying to catch up.
Kael gave her a skeptical look but said nothing.
Finally, the path widened, and they found themselves at the entrance to a narrow cave. Kael gestured for them to enter, his eyes scanning the horizon for any sign of their pursuers.
"We'll rest here for a moment," he said once they were inside. "The winds will make it hard for anyone to track us further, but we can't stay long."
Elara sank to the ground, her legs trembling. The glow of her pendant had dimmed again, and she felt a deep exhaustion settling over her.
"Are you okay?" Seris asked, crouching beside her.
Elara nodded. "Just tired. Using the light takes a lot out of me."
"That's normal," Seris said. "You'll get stronger with practice."
Kael leaned against the cave wall, his arms crossed. "The bounty hunters won't give up easily. We need to reach the archives before they catch up."
Elara looked at him, her exhaustion mingling with determination. "Then let's not waste any more time."
Kael smiled faintly. "Spoken like a true Luminara."
As they prepared to set out again, Elara couldn't shake the feeling that the whispers in the wind had been more than just illusions. They had spoken to her, calling her by name, urging her toward something she couldn't yet understand.
The cliffs held secrets, and Elara was certain they were connected to the light she carried within her.
Whatever lay ahead, she knew there was no turning back.
