Emerald's heart sank, the hope she had felt shattering to pieces. Even though she'd somewhat prepared herself for this outcome, the rejection still hurt like a fresh wound.
"But—" Her voice wavered, drained of strength.
"I'm not upset," Alaric said patiently. "I understand why you wanted to distance yourself from me. It's not that your offer isn't appealing—otherwise, I wouldn't be here right now."
"Then why refuse? You can still visit the orphanage with me when you have free time. Those children are so unfortunate. They were abandoned at birth, and it took so much for them to find a home. Or if it's about the land, just name your price. I have some savings and can give you an IOU for the rest. I—"
"Emerald," Alaric interrupted gently, his hand wrapping around her slender wrist. His expression was serious but soft. "I won't ask why you care so much about the orphanage."
