The moment Anna began to stumble, Alexander appeared at her side like a shield, catching her just as her legs gave out. Her flushed face tilted upward toward him, her breaths shallow and ragged. He held her steady, his brows furrowed in concern as he tried to assess what was happening.

Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed movement—a shadow that disappeared almost instantly. Whoever had been lurking stomped away in frustration, their boots echoing faintly against the marble floor. Alexander turned sharply, but they were gone before he could see who it was.
