The car rolled to a stop in front of a modest, single-story house tucked away in a quiet neighborhood. The house was nothing like the luxurious mansion Anna had shared with Alexander, but it offered the solace she desperately needed. Anna looked at it with a mixture of apprehension and relief.
Vivian turned off the engine and glanced at Anna. "I know it's not much," she said softly, "but it's the best I could arrange on such short notice. Once things settle down, we'll find you a better place."
Anna managed a small smile and nodded. "It's perfect, Viv. Thank you." Her voice wavered slightly as she reached out to squeeze Vivian's hand. "I know I'm putting you through a lot. I—I hope you're not angry."
Vivian scoffed and shook her head. "Anna, please. Don't say things like that. You're like a sister to me. I could never be mad at you."
Anna felt a lump form in her throat at Vivian's kindness. "I don't know what I'd do without you," she whispered.
