Chapter 40

Tanin stirred awake to the soft sound of Damian's footsteps and the faint rustle of the curtains being drawn shut. The morning sun tried to peek through the edges, but Damian made sure its rays didn't touch her face. His gentleness made her heart swell, even as her body reminded her of the night before. Every muscle ached, and the pain hit her like a tidal wave the moment she tried to sit up.

"Easy," Damian said, rushing to her side. His eyes were filled with concern as he placed a hand on her shoulder, gently guiding her back down. "You shouldn't push yourself. After what you went through last night, it's no wonder you're in pain."

Tanin managed a weak smile, her voice soft. "I'll be fine. It's just… more than I expected."
