The air in Blackmere had grown heavier in recent days. Though the court was slowly quieting after Verrin's arrest, Damien knew the kingdom's enemies would not remain idle. Calder's allies were still moving, and the intercepted letter detailing a meeting with a foreign power had raised the stakes considerably.

In the war room, Damien stood over the map, his steel-gray eyes scanning the territories surrounding the kingdom. He traced his finger along the eastern border, where the meeting was reported to take place, then tapped the name of a coastal city: Ravengard.

"They're choosing Ravengard for a reason," Damien said, his tone sharp. "It's one of the largest trade hubs in the east. If Calder's allies secure control there, they'll have access to resources, ships, and a direct path to the capital."
