Shifting Allegiances

The campfire crackled softly as Tobi sat apart from the group, his gaze fixed on the flickering flames.

The air was tense, not from the ever-present danger of mutated creatures or the looming threat of the ruins, but from the simmering unease between the Vanguard and the surface dwellers.

These people, hardened by generations of survival, looked at Tobi and his squad with a mixture of caution and mistrust, their eyes reflecting stories of pain and resilience.

Tobi clenched his fists, his thoughts spiraling. The Vanguard had always been his anchor, his purpose. They had given him structure, comrades, and a sense of duty.

But the surface dwellers stirred something deeper—a connection to the surface world, to a humanity he had never truly known.

'You're thinking too loudly,' Friend's voice broke through the haze. The ghostly figure appeared beside him, leaning casually against a charred log. 'It's almost unbearable.'
