Beneath the Surface

A Call in the Dark

Sid sat in his workshop, staring at the images Hayato had retrieved from the facility. The sight of that twisted experiment—the humanoid figure submerged in liquid—sent a chill down his spine.

Axiom Syndicate was playing with something beyond just drugs and weapons.

His fingers flew across the keyboard, diving deeper into the encrypted files he had recovered earlier. Most of them were useless—logs of shipments, security details, basic research notes. But then, something caught his eye.

A name.

"Project EVO Genesis."

The file was heavily encrypted, but Sid was used to dealing with locked doors. He started running a decryption program when his monitor flickered.

A voice, distorted and cold, filled his speakers.

"You shouldn't be looking at this, Mr. Mount."

Sid's stomach tightened. His firewalls should have kept him hidden.

He quickly shut off his connection, cutting the feed, but the damage was done. Someone knew he was prying.

"Shit."

Grabbing his phone, he dialed Remond.

Racing Against Time

Remond was at home, his mind replaying his conversation with Innes from earlier. He knew she wasn't going to let this go, but he still worried.

Then his phone vibrated.

Sid.

"What's up?"

"We've got a problem. Someone hacked me while I was going through Axiom Syndicate's files."

Remond stood up instantly. "You okay?"

"Yeah, but they know I was looking. We don't have much time before they make a move."

"I'm coming over."

---

Reinforcements

By the time Remond arrived at Sid's apartment, Hayato was already there.

Sid didn't waste time explaining. "I found something called 'Project EVO Genesis.' No full details yet, but Axiom Syndicate is investing heavy resources into it. And someone—some high-level operator—warned me to stop looking."

Hayato folded his arms. "That means we're close to something big."

Remond nodded. "Then we need to find out what exactly they're planning."

Sid sighed. "Easier said than done. They locked down everything the moment they found me snooping."

Remond smirked. "Then let's make them talk."

Axiom Syndicate's Shadow

At an undisclosed location, deep within an underground lab, two men stood in a dimly lit control room.

One was Dr. Malcolm Graves, the scientist who had spent years working on genetic modifications. The other was Lopart, an Axiom Syndicate operator who truly ran the show.

Graves adjusted his glasses nervously. "We should relocate the test subjects. If someone has discovered us—"

Lopart, smirked. "Relax, Graves. You worry too much."

Graves frowned. "You don't understand. Whoever hacked us wasn't an amateur. If they dig deeper, they could—"

Lopart cut him off. "Do you really think you're in charge here?"

Graves stiffened.

Lopart leaned in. "You're just a scientist, Graves. I let you play with your experiments because they serve our purpose. But don't mistake your position."

Graves swallowed hard.

Lopart turned to a nearby screen, where surveillance footage showed a masked figure—Hayato—breaking into their facility the night before.

"Find out who these meddlers are," Lopart ordered. "And deal with them."

The Plan in Motion

Back at Sid's workshop, the trio formulated a plan.

"We need leverage," Sid said. "Something that forces Axiom Syndicate to reveal their next move."

Hayato smirked. "I know just the place to start."

Remond cracked his knuckles. "Let's go hunting."

As the night fell, the streets would once again belong to them.

And this time, they wouldn't stop until they uncovered the truth.
