The mountain lion's grotesque form was a nightmare incarnate. It stood before them, stripped of its fur, with rotting skin revealing taut muscles glistening under the dim moonlight. Its eyes glowed faintly, a fiery hunger burning within.
Alex clenched his fists, his bracelet sparking to life as he activated his ability. A surge of strength coursed through his body, his muscles tightening with raw power. Beside him, Kaia's bracelet glimmered, and her mind sharpened as she chose intelligence, knowing Alex's brute strength would complement her strategic thinking.
The mountain lion lunged without warning, its claws swiping viciously toward Alex. He barely sidestepped, the swipe tearing through the metal post of a nearby tent-like paper.
"Kaia, keep moving!" Alex shouted, countering with a powerful punch to the creature's side. The blow staggered it momentarily, but it turned back quickly, growling with fury.
Kaia darted around the battlefield, her mind racing as she analyzed the creature's movements. She grabbed a tent pole and hurled it toward the lion, forcing it to shift focus. "Alex, its legs! We need to slow it down!"
"On it!" Alex roared, charging low. He tackled the lion's hind leg, gripping tightly and using all his enhanced strength to pin it. The creature snarled, its jaws snapping dangerously close to his face.
Kaia saw her chance. She climbed atop a nearby overturned crate, using her vantage point to leap toward the beast. Her machete gleamed as she slashed its exposed spine. The lion howled in agony, bucking wildly and throwing Alex off balance.
"Kaia, watch out!" Alex yelled as the lion's claw swept upward. Kaia twisted mid-air, the tip of the claw grazing her side, tearing a shallow cut. She landed awkwardly, dropping her machete in the dirt.
"Damn it!" Kaia hissed, clutching her side. "Alex, we need to draw it inside!"
Alex glanced toward the church. "You sure?"
Kaia nodded, wincing but determined. "Trust me!"
They retreated toward the church, Alex baiting the lion with taunts and heavy stomps, while Kaia sprinted ahead. The creature followed its snarls echoing in the eerie silence.
Inside the church, the air was damp and heavy, with broken pews and shattered stained glass casting eerie shadows. Kaia frantically scanned the area, spotting a chandelier hanging precariously above the center.
"Alex, get it under there!" Kaia shouted.
"Got it!" Alex replied, ducking as the lion lunged at him. He grabbed a broken pew, using it as a makeshift shield to force the creature backward.
Kaia climbed a crumbling pillar, her agile movements almost cat-like despite the pain in her side. She reached for the rusted chain holding the chandelier in place, gripping it tightly. "Hold it steady!"
Alex roared as he drove the creature toward the center, delivering a brutal kick to its chest that sent it stumbling beneath the chandelier.
"Now!" Alex yelled.
Kaia yanked the chain with all her might. The chandelier came crashing down, its jagged metal edges impaling the lion. It let out a final, guttural screech before collapsing, its grotesque body twitching once before going still.
They both stood there, panting heavily. Kaia slid down the pillar, landing in a heap on the floor. Alex leaned against a pew, wiping sweat and grime from his face.
"Well," Alex said between breaths, "that... was something."
Kaia chuckled weakly, her head resting against the wall. "Yeah. Remind me to never take a vacation here."
They exchanged tired smiles before stepping outside for fresh air.
As they stood by the SUV, catching their breath, the eerie whistle Kaia had heard earlier filled the air once more. It was louder this time, accompanied by the sound of heavy, deliberate footsteps crunching the gravel.
Kaia froze, her face draining of color. "No... it's coming," she whispered, her voice trembling.
"What's coming?" Alex asked, alarmed.
Before she could answer, the ground seemed to tremble as the source of the footsteps emerged. A hulking creature, towering over two meters tall, appeared at the edge of the clearing. Its pale, bloodstained skin was marred with cuts and scratches, some likely from other predators. Muscles rippled grotesquely beneath its mutilated flesh, and its glowing red eyes locked onto them with terrifying intensity.
"Get in the car!" Kaia screamed, panic overtaking her.
Alex didn't need to be told twice. He jumped into the driver's seat while Kaia scrambled into the passenger side. The creature roared a guttural, bone-chilling sound, and began charging toward them.
Alex slammed his foot on the gas, the SUV's tires screeching as they tore away from the churchyard.
"Hold on!" Alex shouted as the SUV bounced over uneven terrain.
Kaia gripped the dashboard tightly, glancing back nervously. "It's still following us!"
Alex dared a look in the rearview mirror. The monstrous figure lumbered after them, its massive frame slowing it down despite its efforts.
"Not exactly built for speed, are you?" Alex muttered, pressing the pedal harder.
After a tense few moments, the creature began to fade into the distance. Both Alex and Kaia let out sighs of relief as the SUV finally reached smoother ground.
The silence between them stretched for a minute before Alex broke it. "So... how exactly did you know about that thing?"
Kaia hesitated, her gaze fixed on the road ahead. Finally, she said softly, "I'll explain everything... back at the camp."
During the drive, Alex glanced at Kaia as she fell asleep beside him in the SUV, her head tilted slightly toward the window, her hair falling over her face. The rise and fall of her chest was steady, almost soothing. He tightened his grip on the wheel, his thoughts swirling with a mixture of warmth and trepidation.
Why does it feel this way? he wondered, his eyes darting back to the road. I've just met her, and yet… it's like I don't want to imagine this world without her already.
His mind tugged him back to memories of his past. There was a time when he'd loved someone deeply Mia. She was everything to him, and their relationship had been powerful, a bright spot during the darkness of his sister's illness. But as his sister's condition worsened, Alex had no choice but to devote all his time to his family. He thought Mia would understand. Instead, she turned to her ex, seeking comfort Alex could no longer provide. The betrayal had shattered him.
Now, as he glanced at Kaia, he felt the same intensity of emotion bubbling up. But doubt lingered like a shadow. What if I'm wrong about her? What if this world takes her away before I even have the chance to know her? The thought terrified him more than any creature they had faced.
The SUV rumbled as it reached the makeshift camp. Alex parked, climbed out, and began unloading the supplies they'd scavenged from the church. He moved quietly, careful not to wake Kaia. When the last of the boxes were stacked in the storage area, he returned to the car and hesitated.
She looked so peaceful, her features softened by sleep.
She's been through so much, he thought. But she's strong.
Gathering his courage, Alex gently lifted her from the passenger seat. She stirred slightly but didn't wake, her head leaning against his shoulder. As he carried her toward the small shelter, her eyes fluttered open.
"What are you doing?" she asked groggily, locking eyes with him.
Alex froze under her gaze, feeling the heat rise to his face. "Uh… you fell asleep, and I thought…"
Kaia blinked, then smirked. "Alex, I have legs. You can put me down now."
He chuckled nervously, setting her down carefully. "Right. Sorry. Just thought I'd help."
Kaia rolled her eyes but smiled, brushing herself off. "Next time, maybe wake me up instead of wearing knight-in-shining armor on me."
Their laughter temporarily broke the tension, but as they moved to prepare dinner, the air between them became thick with unspoken words. Alex fumbled with the supplies, his hands shaking slightly as he cooked over the fire. Kaia sat nearby, watching him quietly.
He finally handed her a plate, his voice cracking as he said, "Here you go."
"Thanks," she replied, their fingers brushing briefly.
They ate in silence, the crackling of the fire their only company. Alex stole a glance at her, his mouth full, and their eyes met. Kaia's lips curved into a smile, but before Alex could return it, he realized he'd overstuffed his bite and choked slightly, spilling food onto his shirt.
Kaia burst into laughter, pulling a cloth from her bag and handing it to him. "Smooth," she teased.
"Yeah, well," Alex muttered, wiping his shirt, "I'm clearly not winning any awards tonight."
Once their laughter subsided, Kaia's expression grew serious. "Alex, it's time to tell you about how I've met that creature."
He looked up, his heart skipping a beat at her tone.
"When I heard that sound earlier, the one that sent us running… I recognized it because I've encountered that creature before.''
"What?" Alex asked, leaning forward.
Kaia took a deep breath, her voice steady but laced with lingering fear. "When I woke up in this world, it was on the rooftop of a thirty-story building. I had no idea how I got there. The city below was… haunting. Buildings crumbled, plants overtaking streets, and not a single sign of human life. Same as you, I believe. "I climbed down, trying to figure out where I was, and that's when I heard it. The same sound we heard today. I followed it stupidly, I admit, and found myself at a church, the same one we just left. That… thing was there looking as it was searching for something or someone. It came after me, and I barely escaped with my life. If it wasn't for this bracelet…" She touched it absentmindedly. "I wouldn't have made it."
Alex stared at her, the weight of her story settling over him. "You've been here longer than me," he said quietly. "How long?"
"Two weeks," Kaia replied. "Two long, terrifying weeks."
Silence fell between them again, but this time, it was laced with understanding. Alex reached out, placing a hand on hers. "You survived," he said firmly. "And now, we survive together."
Kaia looked at him, her eyes glistening. "Together," she whispered
