"Melody, I wasn't there for you during your darkest moments..."

He gripped my hand tightly, noticing the raised scar on my wrist.

I knew what he was thinking.

"Conrad, everyone has a past. I don't want us to argue in the future because I'm bringing up these old issues now."

I brushed the snowflakes from his eyelashes with my fingertips. "I'm happy to see how successful you've become."

Conrad started to feel uneasy again. "But I promised you I'd give you the best life possible..."

I blinked, my nose turning red from the cold. "Look, I can afford to buy my own scarf. That means I'm already doing pretty well."

The light in Conrad's eyes dimmed completely, his voice trembling as he spoke: "So there's really no going back for us?"

"That's right. As you said, we just can't go back."

I wrapped my arms tightly around myself. "You have your path to follow, and I have my own bridges to cross. I won't be returning to New York City."
