Cindy stood near the counter, arms crossed, tapping her fingers impatiently against her elbow. She had come here with a purpose, a very specific one. But Lucas… Lucas wasn't reacting the way she had expected.

No flustered stammering. No awkward dodging. Just a distracted, distant expression that made her irritation bubble up even more.

He forgot.

She could feel it in her gut.

She had dressed up, teased him, set the mood perfectly—and yet, here he was, looking like his mind was somewhere else entirely.

Cindy narrowed her eyes. "Lucas."

He blinked, pulled from whatever thoughts had been eating at him. "Huh?"

Her lips curled, but there was no amusement behind the smirk this time. "You forgot, didn't you?"

A flicker of something crossed his face—surprise, maybe guilt—but it was gone too fast for her to catch.

"I didn't forget," he said, but the way he said it lacked conviction.
