The forest loomed around us, dark and foreboding, every shadow a potential threat, every rustle a possible predator.
My legs were jelly after the frantic escape from the demon bear, and my heart still hadn't decided if it wanted to slow down or leap out of my chest.
"We're screwed," Alicia said, voice flat as she slumped against a tree trunk, trying to catch her breath.
"We're so, so screwed. You realize we left everything back there, right? The fire, the food, the water—all of it."
"I noticed, thanks," I said, scanning the area for anything that could be useful. "But unless you want to go back and ask the demon bear nicely for our stuff, we're going to have to improvise."
Alicia groaned and tilted her head back, staring at the canopy above. "Why did I pair up with you again?"
