Chapter 195: The Silent War

As Su Wu watched the transport vehicles, loaded with disinfecting and testing equipment, slowly disappear into the heavy rain, he shifted his attention to the latest report.

The first death had been confirmed within his sphere of influence.

"It really feels like a war," Su Wu silently thought.

Unfortunately, in this war, the mighty artillery clusters that once had the power to move mountains, and the electromagnetic weapons capable of slaughtering tens of thousands in a short time, could do nothing. The only adversary was the fragile human body.

As he continued with the isolation and disinfection of the subsidiary shelters, Su Wu's focus shifted to Jiewei Shelter. This shelter, where the survivors from the surface had gathered after Su Wu had ordered the lockdown, had now become the most severely infected area. The first death also occurred here.

For research purposes, Su Wu decided to move the Farmhouse Shelter's biological laboratory to Jiewei Shelter. Chen Yue, who was in charge of the lab, had a deep expertise in biology, which made her the ideal person for the virus analysis. Unlike her sister Chen Xin, who specialized in chemistry, Chen Yue's skills were perfectly suited for the task and wouldn't waste the effects of spiritual enhancement.

It quickly became clear that Chen Yue's talent was exceptional. Just 20 minutes after taking over the research, she had developed a low-cost test strip capable of detecting whether someone was infected. This achievement was swiftly applied within Jiewei Shelter.

Out of the 700 people in the shelter, after testing with the strips, those who appeared normal were divided into two groups. One group consisted of people who were completely uninfected, while the other group, seemingly normal, were actually infected individuals in a latent state, potentially about to break out.

"Only 12 people are completely normal," Su Wu thought grimly. "The infection rate is terrifyingly fast."

Looking at the 12 completely normal people, isolated in the lowest level of the shelter, Su Wu felt a deep unease. Even though the shelter was hastily set up, and there had been almost no disinfecting equipment in the first couple of hours, the speed at which the virus spread was alarming, showing just how deadly the unknown virus was.

At 7 PM, Su Wu received an invitation to an online meeting from the official shelter. Since Su Wu sent out the alert, other shelters had started to react, and after a few hours of investigation, they realized that, in fact, Farmhouse Shelter wasn't the first to experience a virus outbreak.

"According to the latest report," a minister responsible for medical affairs in an official shelter said during the meeting, "two small shelters have reported that all survivors inside have died from the infection, which has been named the Rola Virus. Our epidemic control department has sent personnel to collect samples, and we expect to have an initial report within 24 hours."

The news brought an overwhelming sense of pressure to everyone in the meeting. An entire shelter wiped out by an infection was no small matter. In the face of such a virus, there was little difference between large and small shelters. Bigger spaces and more people didn't offer more protection.

"We have also encountered infections in our shelter," said the head of a large shelter, his voice filled with grim seriousness. "The hospital where the infected are located has been completely sealed. Initial judgment shows that using masks and regular disinfectants is ineffective. As long as you are in the same room with an infected person for more than half an hour, you will inevitably be infected."

The tension was palpable. The reality of being so close to death, with no way to escape, was a heavy burden on everyone. Underground shelters, by their nature, were confined spaces, and there was nowhere to run.

More heads of large shelters shared similar reports, leading everyone to realize that the virus had likely spread to every corner of Jianghe City.

Su Wu listened in silence to the voices of those on the call, feeling their helplessness. The virus was incredibly contagious and had a terrifyingly high mortality rate, nearly approaching a 100% fatality rate. This was something that had never occurred in the history of human civilization.

After considering the situation, Su Wu requested to speak. This was not the time to hold back. If the situation got out of control and the number of infections rose, a more terrifying strain of the virus could emerge, and even Su Wu might not escape unscathed.

"I have something to say," Su Wu spoke, his voice calm and authoritative. The people on the call immediately turned their attention to him. His reputation, gained through his consistent actions in past crises, had grown to the point where his influence was almost equal to that of the official shelters.

"Based on our observations of the Rola Virus," Su Wu continued, "it spreads through water and water vapor. As long as the humidity in the air reaches a certain level, it becomes a breeding ground for the virus. Currently, across the entire surface, all water-covered areas and even the air itself are contaminated with the virus."

"The concentration is highest in the city center and decreases as you move outward. Beyond 30 kilometers from the city, the virus concentration is only about 1% of what it is in the city center."

Su Wu's words caused a wave of shock and fear among the attendees. They knew the situation was serious, but no one had expec

ted it to be this severe.
