CHAPTER 52

Skylar's POV

The ticking was maddening. A low, steady rhythm hammering into my skull like the countdown of doom. I was shaking as I crouched by the console, wires spilling out in every direction.

"Red or blue?" I muttered under my breath, squinting at the chaotic mess. "Why's it always red or blue in the movies?"

"Skylar, focus!" Julian's voice snapped through my earpiece, sharp and commanding. "What's the situation in there?"

Not great," I shot back, blowing a strand of hair out of my face. "This isn't exactly plug-and-play, Julian. There's a damn maze of wires in here, and I don't know which one will blow me to pieces!"

"Take a deep breath," Jasper chimed in, his voice calmer but no less urgent. "The timer-how much time do we have?

I stared at the timer flashing across the screen: big, angry red numbers, counting down the time. Four minutes, thirty-six seconds. I swallowed hard.
