The Council's Shadow

Chapter 36: The Council's Shadow

---

The Next Move

The days after Virelith's awakening were filled with new routines. Kai had barely settled into the responsibilities that came with the title of Warden of Shadows when the Council began making its move. Whispers filled the camp, and the tension was palpable. The Council had its eyes set on him, and they weren't subtle about it.

Kai stood outside his tent, watching the horizon, his mind focused on the matters at hand. Beside him, Virelith perched on a nearby rock, her golden eyes scanning the camp with quiet intensity. Her human form had become her preference, though she still took her dragon form when needed.

Kai's beasts were with him—Yami coiled silently near his feet, and Nyx lingered nearby, her serpent form shimmering in the shadows. Their presence was a constant reminder of the power he wielded, and now, with Virelith by his side, he was stronger than ever.

But that strength also attracted danger.

The familiar clink of armored boots drew Kai's attention. Ryo approached, his swords gleaming in the sunlight. His usual playful demeanor was replaced with a more serious expression, his sharp eyes scanning the surroundings.

"Warden," Ryo greeted him with a respectful nod. "The Council has sent their envoy. I don't trust them. They've been asking questions about you."

Kai's eyes narrowed. "I expected that. Their interest is becoming too obvious."

Ryo grunted. "They've always been like that. They know where the power lies, and they want to control it. Don't let them get under your skin."

"I won't," Kai replied, his tone steady. "But we need to prepare. They'll make their move soon. I won't be caught off guard."

Before Ryo could respond, the unmistakable figure of Elara appeared in the distance, her silver hair catching the wind. Her expression was unreadable, but Kai knew her well enough to sense the weight of her presence.

She approached slowly, her sharp amber eyes meeting his gaze. "Warden of Shadows," she said with a cool smile. "I hear the Council is finally taking notice of you."

"I didn't expect anything less," Kai replied, his voice calm.

"I wouldn't get too comfortable," Elara warned, her gaze flicking to the other beasts gathered around Kai. "They won't just let you be. You've made too many waves."

Kai's lips curled into a small, confident smile. "I don't let anyone dictate my path."

Elara's lips quirked into a faint, knowing smile. "That's exactly why they're watching you so closely. You'll need allies. The Council doesn't tolerate those who defy them."

Kai glanced at his beasts, feeling the bond between them solidify. "I have enough allies."

For a moment, Elara studied him, her amber eyes piercing through the facade he wore. She seemed to recognize the unspoken strength within him, and though she remained wary, there was a flicker of respect in her eyes.

"I'll be watching," she said quietly before turning and disappearing into the crowd.

The Council's Envy

As Kai moved through the camp that evening, he couldn't shake the feeling of being watched. It wasn't just the usual attention that came with his rising status; this felt more calculated, more deliberate.

He was making waves—big ones—and that kind of attention came with consequences.

That night, Kai received a message: a summons from the Council.

He didn't hesitate. He knew exactly what they wanted. The timing was no coincidence. They had waited for him to grow stronger before making their move.

Virelith, now in her human form, stood by his side as they entered the grand hall, her regal presence drawing whispers from the gathered members. The room fell silent as they approached the center, where the Council members sat in their seats, their eyes trained on him.

At the head of the table, the leader of the Council, a tall, imposing figure named Lord Harvin, regarded Kai with cold, calculating eyes. His long, silver hair framed his stern face, and his sharp features seemed carved from stone.

"Warden of Shadows," Lord Harvin began, his voice deep and commanding. "You have grown strong. The Council has taken notice of your rise."

Kai stood tall, his expression unfazed. "I know why I'm here."

"We have a proposition for you," Harvin continued, his eyes narrowing. "Your power is undeniable, but we cannot allow it to exist outside of our control. Join us, Warden, and you will have the resources and protection of the Council. We will ensure your success, and in return, you will serve us."

Kai's jaw clenched. He had been expecting this, but hearing it directly was a different matter. He had no intention of becoming another pawn in their game.

"I don't serve anyone," Kai said, his voice cold. "I make my own path."

A flicker of irritation passed across Lord Harvin's face, but he quickly masked it with a smile. "We offer you protection and power beyond your imagination. Think carefully, Warden. Refuse, and you will become a target. A dangerous one."

Kai stood his ground, his eyes unblinking. "I've never been one to bow to threats."

The Council members exchanged glances, but no one spoke. The tension in the room was thick, and Kai could feel the weight of their gazes. This wasn't just a negotiation; it was a test.

Lord Harvin's smile widened, though there was no warmth in it. "Very well. You've made your choice. But remember, Warden, we always have a way of getting what we want."

With that, the Council dismissed him, but not without leaving a final, chilling message.
