The villa was enveloped in a heavy silence, broken only by the steady ticking of the living room clock. Each passing second brought us closer to the fateful moment.

Alessandro hadn't left my side since our conversation. He had stayed there, his hand resting on mine, his gaze locked onto mine, as if he wanted to imprint every detail of my face into his memory before I left.

"Everything's ready," he finally whispered, his rough voice breaking the silence.

I felt my heart tighten.

"Matteo has secured the route. You'll leave before dawn."

A shiver ran down my spine. Dawn. It was so close.

I averted my eyes, staring at an invisible point on the wall. Leaving… abandoning everything. Him. This house. Our life together.

"You're not saying anything."

His voice was soft, almost worried.
