Chapter 030: Escape

Leaving the palace required at least a brief word to Emilia Everard. When Lucille Everard reached the doors of the Hall of Contemplation, it was late at night and the lamps inside were brightly lit. Normally, Lucille didn't need to announce her presence, and the palace servants understood this unspoken rule. But tonight's matter was urgent, so she instructed Autumn Clarke to send everyone away. Soon, only three people remained in the spacious chamber.

It was already deep into the night. Emilia, her hair loose and ready for bed, had been moments away from sleep. The unexpected arrival of her older sister filled her with dread. Struggling to suppress her fear, she murmured, "Sister…"

Lucille did not respond at once. She sat at a table outside, flipping through documents and memorials before finally speaking with severity, "Tomorrow, I will head south. You must manage court affairs diligently in my absence. Do not lose yourself in trivial indulgences."
