"You've all been most accommodating these past few days."

Beatrice Byrd's sudden politeness took The Princess Royal by surprise. Of course, she recognized Beatrice's daughter—she had seen the girl progress from the tiny infant once cradled in Beatrice's arms to the taller child she was now.

"You've taken wonderful care of her," The Princess Royal remarked. Indeed, Ivy Dawson stood half a head taller than most children her age, all smiles and sweet words. Upon seeing The Princess Royal, she cheerfully called out, "Aunt Lucille!"

Smiling, The Princess Royal swept aside the stack of royal reports on her desk. "Don't mention it. This palace stands half-empty. Your presence can hardly be called an intrusion."

Even so, it was unusual for so many people without the Everard name to be living here. But Beatrice knew The Princess Royal didn't mind. Sighing with relief, she asked, "How is your health?"
