Beatrice Byrd had changed into equally tattered clothes and, perhaps out of caution, brought Ivy Dawson along. The group had no fixed route, but by chance they encountered a caravan heading for the Kingdom of Northwind and joined them. In their disguises, even acquaintances would fail to recognize them. Lina Riley, for one, found Lucille Everard's altered appearance unsettling.
They traveled on a wagon loaded with goods, a few leaders riding ahead on horseback. The caravan was guarded by both their own escorts and hired security. Being a sociable sort, Beatrice struck up conversations and soon gleaned everything about this merchant crew. By happenstance, the caravan belonged to the Wren family—albeit a smaller branch that did not carry the main clan's banner.
After extracting her intel, Beatrice returned to Lina and the others. Grinning, she announced, "It's a branch of the Wren family. They're shipping a batch of lower-grade porcelain, probably to test the market."
