After a long, bumpy journey, Lina Riley and her companions finally reached the capital of the Kingdom of Northwind. Having never been there before, Lina found herself overcome with curiosity, looking all around. Yet no matter her wonder, she kept The Princess Royal's hand firmly in hers, as if afraid that if she let go for an instant, Her Highness would vanish.
Over Lina's shoulder hung a bow—the prize she had won at the recent horse race. The Princess Royal had examined it carefully, determining the material to be some sort of animal horn. But after figuring it out, she lost interest. Lina, not wanting her to carry any unnecessary weight, took on all the luggage herself.
Observing how vastly different this place was from Ravenwell, Lina was about to comment when someone else beat her to it.
"Wow! First time I've been here," exclaimed Blanche Quinn.
And so the words died on Lina's lips. Feeling a bit exasperated, she asked, "Aren't you from around here?"
