Amid a cluster of remote, derelict buildings—so secluded one had to know the area well to even find it—hiding places were actually few. Anyone lurking around would be easy to spot.

Lina Riley fixed her gaze on a rundown house behind them. From the rooftop, one might peer through a window, but the view would still be limited. The second-floor vantage might be better.

No one lived in that building; the second-floor loft's windows hung precariously by a sliver of frame, looking like a slight breeze would tear them loose. Inside were rotting furnishings, sunbeams slanting through the broken windows, revealing motes of dust adrift in each glowing shaft.
