Early at dawn, Lucy Sinclair was summoned to the palace—thus delaying her supposed burial rites for another day.
Escorted by palace attendants to Victoria Ashwood's residence, Lucy found Victoria quietly seated, white chess piece in hand, frowning thoughtfully at the board in front of her.
"Lady Victoria, County Lady Lucy has arrived."
At the attendant's announcement, Victoria finally put down her piece. She upended the board, separating black and white stones into different containers, then moved the chessboard aside. She seemed unsurprised by Lucy's arrival and simply gestured to one half-decent stool. "Sit."
Lucy complied and, opening her medical kit, placed a bowl and a small knife on the table. Victoria extended her arm, and with practiced care, Lucy drew blood into a bowl of water. There was a slight sting, and soon the clear water turned red.
