Chapter 109: Staying True

Because of everything that had just happened, Lina was on her guard. She watched the woman in white and asked, "What do you mean? Who are you?"

The woman placed her bamboo flute on the grave and then pointed at the name "Lina Riley" carved into the tombstone. "My name is Lina Riley—a wrongful death, or perhaps, I am you."

Lina hadn't expected to run into a ghost in broad daylight. She took two steps back, silently counted to three, then turned and bolted without looking back, running faster and faster.

Near the city gates, she finally slowed her pace. A pair of soldiers stood there, noticing her. Their movements were stiff, their eyes vacant, and they kept muttering, "Lina, time for bed."

After hearing it a couple of times, Lina felt a wave of drowsiness. She bit down hard on her hand, and the pain startled her wide awake—only to strike deeper terror into her heart, for if it hurt this badly, it wasn't a mere dream.
