"Sir, I'll go find Lin Yue."
Jiang Xiaoci lowered her head, seemingly reluctant to meet Yi Bai's gaze. She whispered, "Lin Yue and the others are back. Today's tasks need some adjustments. I'll send a few people to follow Chen Qiuren tonight."
"Mm, go ahead."
Yi Bai nodded, looking down at the small box of medicine in his hand. Suddenly, he called out to Jiang Xiaoci just before she left, "Xiaoci, what should we do with this medicine?"
Jiang Xiaoci's figure trembled slightly. She didn't turn around but spoke softly, "It's up to you, sir."
With that, she hurried away.
"I get to decide?"
Yi Bai muttered, fiddling with the medicine box. He pondered, "Is this a hint?"
Hmm, maybe tonight.
With Jiang Xiaoci gone, Yi Bai slipped back into his comfortable hermit lifestyle. The day passed without incident, as he spent the entire morning absorbed in one game after another.
Yi Bai had thought about making use of his new talent skill, perhaps to test it on an unlucky survivor, but unfortunately, the survivors in the area had all been cleared out by Lin Yue and the others. The whole neighborhood was nearly empty, and Yi Bai couldn't go out himself to search, so he had to put that idea on hold.
"Almost noon," Yi Bai's watch timer beeped. He glanced at the time and stretched lazily.
"I wonder what today's reward will be. Speaking of which, what does the shelter really need right now?"
Yi Bai thought to himself. "Security's sorted, we've got enough personnel, entertainment's taken care of… what's missing? Maybe it's how to expand the shelter faster?"
He mulled over it and realized that it was probably just that. He had a clear grasp on the shelter's development, and it seemed the talent rewards weren't always for him specifically, but for the shelter as a whole. Considering that the shelter was now in a phase of outward expansion, it made sense that today's reward might be tied to that.
An hour later, the prompt for his talent reward appeared.
"Congratulations! You've triggered a talent reward: 'C-Class Skill – Eye of Longing.'"
Eye of Longing: C-class skill, active skill; upon activation, you can gain the perspective of any resident within the shelter. Duration depends on the user's stamina. During the skill's use, you can also use additional stamina to transmit your voice to the current perspective holder, though this will consume a lot of stamina.
Note: Any being that has lived in the shelter for over 72 hours is considered a resident of the shelter.
"Hmm? This skill... seems a bit like an entertainment-type skill."
Yi Bai paused for a moment, then thought, "Is the system suggesting I'm too bored sitting at home all day? Maybe this 'Eye' skill is like a reward that lets me see what's going on outside from the comfort of my room?"
The first thing Yi Bai thought of was being able to view the actions of Lin Yue and the other soldiers who were out exploring. After all, the chaotic world outside was far more exciting than his monotonous bedroom.
Of course, this skill wasn't just limited to those out on expeditions—it worked for any resident inside the shelter as well. Yi Bai could watch anyone, even if they were in the middle of something private like a shower.
However, Yi Bai wasn't interested in spying on anyone like that.
"This skill is actually a perfect match for the parasitic ability I got yesterday."
Yi Bai carefully examined it and suddenly realized the two skills were a natural pairing!
The parasitic skill was powerful, but its limitation was Yi Bai's own condition. Because of his talent, he had to stay at home for long periods without leaving the shelter. That made it hard for him to reach new potential targets.
For example, right now, without a good method or suitable target, the parasitic skill was practically useless. He couldn't complete a parasitic takeover without being able to come into physical contact with someone or at least see them. But with this new skill, Eye of Longing, Yi Bai could use the vision of someone like Lin Yue, who was out on an expedition, to complete the parasitic process.
"This reward is perfect! Exactly what I need right now!" Yi Bai smiled with satisfaction. "I haven't tested whether I can parasitize remotely with this, but since the skill exists, I can probably use it that way."
Talent rewards never come with useless things. If it was given to him, Yi Bai was sure it would serve a purpose.
"Let's try it out!"
Yi Bai quickly shut down his computer and eagerly moved to test his new skill.
"Let's see… it's been a while since Lin Yue and the others left. I'll check with Xiaoci for today's task schedule first."
Yi Bai swiftly went downstairs and asked Jiang Xiaoci for the assignment details. The girls were still inside, continuing to fortify the shelter's facilities. Li Ya was busy in her room working on research and crafting new tools for the shelter. Chen Qiuren was asleep in his room, while the three soldiers were out on different exploration missions. The rest of the team, including Lin Yue, were split into three squads of three, carrying out regular external tasks like exploration, patrols, and checks.
"Sir, you don't usually take much interest in these matters. What's different today?" Jiang Xiaoci asked curiously after handing over the task list.
"I got something interesting, a fun new skill." Yi Bai smiled mysteriously and quickly went upstairs, focusing on activating his new ability.
"Activate skill: Eye of Longing. Target resident: Lin Yue!"
The moment Yi Bai activated the skill, he felt a strange light in front of his eyes.
Soon, he felt as if he had gone blind. His surroundings went pitch-black. A few breaths later, his vision returned. But what he saw wasn't his bedroom anymore. Instead, he was now seeing the world through Lin Yue's eyes, who was cautiously scanning her surroundings, walking with her team in tow.
The area looked like the street of a dilapidated neighborhood, with overgrown plants and cracked roads underfoot. By Lin Yue's side were two other soldiers: sniper Liu Rui and communications officer Li Yang.
This felt incredibly novel to Yi Bai. He almost felt like he was sitting on a couch wearing a virtual reality headset, playing an ultra-realistic exploration game.
Yi Bai focused on his stamina and realized that it hadn't decreased much. With an experimental mindset, he tried to communicate with Lin Yue.
"Lin Yue? Lin Yue!"
...
Lin Yue, walking briskly, suddenly froze in her tracks. Her sharp eyes scanned the area, her body tensing as the muzzle of her gun adjusted in response to her gaze. Liu Rui, the sniper, swiftly climbed over a fitness structure in the neighborhood, hiding in the bushes. Li Yang, the communications officer, moved behind Lin Yue, positioning himself to back her up.
"Captain, what's wrong?" Li Yang whispered, his hand on his gun as he scanned the surroundings. "Do you sense something?"
"I heard the boss's voice," Lin Yue lowered her voice, her eyes narrowing. "This isn't a hallucination. I really heard it."
"The boss is at home. How could I hear him without any comms gear?"
"I remember the boss said some survivors have special abilities. This might mean we're being watched."
"Someone's pretending to be the boss, trying to communicate with me!"
