since that day

CLANG! BANG

I've been working on this for three hours now! My hands were almost fully black

"Are you alright Jae-wook? You've been working for two hours now..."

I looked up to see my younger sister looking at me from the doorway with a worried look on her face.

"I'm alright... The alternator isn't charging the battery properly, so the car keeps stalling. I don't know how to fix it"

"Then how about a break? It won't hurt you will it?"

I let out a sigh and glanced at the general direction of my sister. She was right, I should take a break and clear my mind. My father is a Automotive Electrician who's currently in the hospital, so I've had to take over for a bit.

"I guess you are right Kyung-sook. Fine let's go"

I walked behind her and pushed her wheelchair along. My sister was a cripple who couldn't walk. There were many things she couldn't do in life, yet she always smiled and brightend my day, i coudnt help but get protective over her.

I sat on the living room couch watching the TV with crossed legs.

"A level 3 kaiju attacked Toronto last night. Thankfully kaiju exterminator's got there before major damage was caused. The beast was over 10 meters tall"

I grimaced at the word kaiju. Yes kaijus. Monsters of different sizes that are humanity's number 1 threat, even more so than other countries. They are all around the world, and kaiju exterminator's are the ones who deal with them

"Geez... sounds horrible."

Kyung-sook who was behind me said. Everytime I thought about kaiju's I thought about Kyung-sook. What if a kaiju attacked? She can't run, she wouldn't even be able to defend herself against a human. I always worry about her... worry about her weakness

"No need to worry. There hasn't been a kaiju attack in Daegu for years now"

I replied calmy to comfort my nervous sister. Indeed there hasn't been a single kaiju attack in Daegu for as long as i can remember. Areas like Seoul and Busan though are more commonly attacked by kaiju

"I still can't help but-"

"Don't worry... if any kaiju attack I'll always be here to protect you sis"

I abruptly stood up and pat her shoulder. My heart jumped slightly when I felt the earth shake a little. It was probably just a little earthquake.

Kyung-sook was already gone and folding clothing away in her room while humming something to herself.

"I should do something too. I'll search up a tutorial on fixing that damned alternator"

I grumbled and grabbed my phone before quickly typing away. Another earthquake. A chill ran down my spine causing me to gulp loudly.

I was back in the garage fixing the alternator

"Finally got it! After three hours I did it!"

A sigh of relief left my lips and I stretched

"It sure took a bit but I did it, maybe I should celebrate with some burgers"

My mouth watered as I imagine burgers.

BEEP BEEP BEEP!

sharp and jarring, like a phone alarm that refuses to be ignored.

I looked at my phone with confusion before grabbing it

[THIS IS NOT A TEST! A KAIJU HAS BEEN DETECTED IN YOUR AREA. SEEK IMMEDIATE SHELTER AND DO NOT VENTURE OUTSIDE]

my eyes went wide open and I rushed to where Kyung-sook should be. My sock clad feet sliding across the floor

"HEY SIS WHERE THE HELL ARE YOU?!"

I rushed around the house looking for my sister. I found her frozen while looking at her phone, usually I was the non chalant and calm brother, but at this moment I couldn't help but want to piss my pants

"WE HAVE TO GET OUT!"

The nearest shelter was about two blocks away. Sure we could stay here and risk being crushed

"W-wait! Maybe we don't have to go. I mean maybe it's a tiny kaiju"

"Isn't it better to be safe than sorry?"

"What if we get crushed under the debris or come across the kaiju?"

I didn't listen to her and pushed her out. I had to keep my sister safe.

I carried her through the streets. Cars were abandoned and people rushed to the nearest shelter. I looked behind me and saw it. The kaiju standing at over 30 meters tall was crushing homes with its feet. It let out a loud roar that hurt my ears.

"Jae-wook! It's-"

I looked up and saw a car flying towards our direction. I grabbed Kyung-sook and held her bridal style as I ran.

Come on I'm almost there! I panted and sweated while running. The earth shaked beneath my feet as the kaiju took slow and certain steps. I frantically ran even though my legs were burning and my chest felt hollow. I looked around to see the chaos. People stuck beneath rubble, people crying

"Take her and leave!"

A dying man shouted as he handed his daughter over to his wife. It was quiet the brutal sight. Blood, tears, organs. Enough to give anyone trauma.

"Jae-wook just let me go!"

"Hell no! Don't say something stupid like that ever again! I'll protect you!"

The shelter was now visible. A giant door leading to an underground bunker. Kaiju have been around for about five hundred years so humans have naturally found ways to combat them and defend themselves.

"We are almost there"

Just a bit more... please whatever god is out there give me a bit more strength. I gritted my teeth and bit my lip so hard I drew a bit of blood.

"Come on-"

I tripped on a body which caused Kyung-sook to fall from my arms and roll away. I reached my hand out in order to grab her. In an instant she was crashed beneath debris that flew our way.

tears were freely rolling down my cheeks that instant. she was dead. My little sister had died infront of me, crushed in an instant l.

My purpose was crushed in an instant
