The rest of the Coven seemed rather surprised when I made my announcement, both from the fact that I had 'overlooked' higher end talent for someone with a more mediocre track record and also because of her family history, something that I pointedly ignored whenever someone attempted to approach it in discussion with me.
For her part Wynn seemed unbothered by that and more so taken aback that I had chosen her, the short blue haired Witch to be staring at me in shock as we made our way towards the center of the square to finalize all of this with Moriggan and the rest of the heads.
There was no need to remain for the grand ceremony afterwards, and after asking Wynn if she desired to participate I was much relieved to find that she was just as determined as I was to leave early, so we went up and gave the old crone the words, the promise and the magic needed to finish this off properly.
"I, Corvina, swear to take on Wynn Benoix as my apprentice for the foreseeable future and impart unto her as much of my knowledge of the Mystic Arts as I possibly can so that she might take the proper strides into the Coven so that she might better the world tomorrow."
Standing tall beside the shorter girl, I stared straight into Moriggan's eyes and ignored her slight irritation that I wanted to leave early by forcing her to recognize this apprenticeship, and as the silence stretched out uncomfortably for a few seconds Wynn stepped forwards and spoke her part as well, though not with the same confidence that I had.
"I, Wynn Benoix, promise to learn anything and everything that my mentor - Corvina - teaches me in these upcoming years, and with all of my heart I swear to work for a better future for not only myself but for the Coven too."
There were no scripted lines here, just a promise to ourselves, to one another and to the Coven as a whole that needed to be witnessed and ratified by the Coven, so it was always interesting to hear what was said at these things.
Generic as they were, it showed who was genuine and who wasn't with how much bravado was within their oath, and hearing the simplicity within Wynn's was refreshing, if only because she took a step back and dragged in a deep breath, still clearly surprised.
"Very well then. Corvina, Wynn Benoix, we recognize this oath and hold you to maintain your oaths going forwards. Work and study hard, for your sake as much as ours."
Curt didn't even begin to describe Moriggan, but I didn't care at all since I just wanted to get out of here, and I was far more interested in finding out more about Wynn then I was about dealing with Coven politics...
As she stood beside me Wynn muttered "Lowkey can't believe this...", another odd saying I sort of understood but didn't know what to think of, but for now it didn't really matter as we both bowed to the Coven before turning and heading out of the square.
We walked in silence for a few moments before I asked "Where are your things? I can help carry them to my home nearby.", looking over towards the blue haired girl and wondering just how much we had to do before we could truly leave.
"Oh, um... I already have everything packed, Miss Corvina. It's all inside of this storage bracelet I made in the Academy..."
Showing off her wrist, the Noblewoman shook the slightly gaudy accessory and gave me a slightly tense smile, her green eyes meeting mine for a moment before she looked away again, adding "I didn't have much anyways..."
On one hand I wanted to ask her about that so that we could begin to open up some more to one another, but on the other I knew that she was going to need some time and some space to open up properly, so instead I asked "Do you know any Polymorphing spells? If not, this shall be your first lesson."
She seemed surprised at that, and after a second of staring at me she eventually coughed and said "I um... it's not my specialty, but... I can transform, yes. Are... are we traveling far, Miss Corvina?"
"Not terribly far, Wynn. It's about a quarter of a days flight from here."
"A quarter day?!"
The exasperation in her voice caused me to raise a brow, and instantly Wynn gulped and said "N-Not that it's terribly far or anything, but like... that's kinda far...", which only made that brow arch even more and made the bluenette's cheeks redden as she realized just what she had said.
"It'll be a good gauge of your overall stamina, so before we leave we can stop and eat to prepare you for this. You'll need stamina going forwards if you wish to truly be my apprentice."
Her blush deepened at that, and I had to admit I was a tad lost on why but after another few seconds she coughed and nodded, looking away from me as she muttered "Y-Yeah, of course... makes sense...", though there was something else she said that I barely caught.
Something with the word 'gutter' I think, and that was confusing to me but I must have misheard her, so instead I brought her over to a cafe that was a good bit away from the square so that we could have our own privacy.
Ordering a flight of pastries, light sandwiches and tea, I sat back and studied her some more, taking in her overall style and composure at the moment as she sat stiffly opposite me.
Her uniform - a black blazer over a dark blue shirt with a pleated black skirt that reached her knees - was almost regulation compliant at first glance, but I noticed the alterations she had done after a second of looking.
A slightly lower neckline on the shirt that revealed a tad more cleavage, folded collars that emphasized her collarbones as well as the simple, common blue river stone necklace she wore, and a slit down one side of her skirt that she had filled in with a matching dark blue cloth to give herself some style.
Then there was that gaudy silver bracelet that had fake pearls on her wrist, and the accompany fake pearls that hung from her ears; all of it was tastefully minimalistic, but very much out of the ordinary for a rather mediocre student with a mediocre record.
When she noticed I was staring the girl blushed again, and I had to raise a brow before I gestured at the various foods in front of us, beckoning for her to eat and get her strength up for what was to come.
