Wenyan could feel the walls of the abyss closing in around him, tightening like the grip of an invisible hand. The landscape trembled, the shadows flickering, as if the very ground he stood upon was not real, but a projection—a mirage conjured by the Nexus itself. Mei, or whatever had become of her, stood before him, her hollow eyes staring into his soul, an emptiness that stretched beyond comprehension.
The voice, once coming from her lips, now seemed to resonate from every corner of the dark landscape. It was everywhere, seeping into the very fabric of his thoughts, an overwhelming presence that drowned out everything else.
"You are part of it now, Wenyan," the voice said softly. "You always have been. The Nexus does not simply claim—it connects. It binds the consciousness of all who come into contact with it. You have touched the essence of the Nexus, and it has touched you."
Wenyan tried to step back, but his legs felt heavy, as if they were no longer his own. He reached out, desperate for something—anything—that could break him free from this grip. But it was futile. There was no escape.
"No," he choked out, his voice hoarse with emotion. "This isn't real. This isn't me. I'm not part of this thing. I won't be."
The darkness around him swirled and writhed, responding to his resistance, as if it were a living entity itself. The shadows thickened and stretched toward him, like tendrils reaching out, eager to claim him. Mei's figure flickered, her body morphing as if she were caught between two worlds—the human one, and the one of the Nexus.
"You cannot fight what is inside you," the voice said, its tone calm, almost soothing. "You have always been connected. The markings, the whispers—they were a part of you long before you ever stepped into the Nexus's reach. You are the one who has come closest to understanding, Wenyan. And now, you are a part of the whole."
The weight of those words crushed him. It was true, wasn't it? Everything he had experienced—Heng's disappearance, the strange symbols, the pull of the Nexus—it had all been leading him here, to this moment. He had been drawn to it, searching for answers, but now he understood. The Nexus wasn't an external force to be fought. It was embedded within every thought, every action. It had already claimed him, and in doing so, it had consumed everything he had ever known.
"You... you're wrong," Wenyan gasped, fighting to regain some semblance of control. He could feel the darkness creeping closer, suffocating him. He looked at Mei, or the thing that wore her face, and his chest tightened. "I didn't come here to be consumed. I came here to stop this. To save you. To save anyone still alive."
The figure that had once been Mei seemed to smile, a terrible, twisted expression. "Save? You cannot save what is already a part of the Nexus. You cannot save yourself. You cannot save me. There is no salvation here, Wenyan. Only understanding. Only the truth."
Her form began to dissolve, the darkness swallowing her like an insatiable maw. As her shape blurred and faded, the markings across her skin pulsed, growing brighter, consuming her. Her body seemed to disintegrate into the very shadows, leaving only the faint outline of her form. The voice lingered, echoing in his mind as the shadows continued to swirl around him.
"You will never be free, Wenyan. The Nexus is within you, and it will stay with you until the end."
With a gasp, Wenyan stumbled backward, his vision flickering. The landscape around him began to distort, collapsing in on itself, as if reality itself was being unraveled. The once vast, endless abyss shrank into a small, tight space, and the ground beneath his feet began to crack, splitting wide open.
The familiar, oppressive hum of the Nexus returned, a low, constant vibration that thrummed through his bones. Wenyan knew what was happening—the Nexus was pulling him in, tightening its hold on him. And there was nothing he could do to stop it.
In a panic, he reached for anything to steady himself, anything to hold on to. His mind raced, searching for an escape, an answer—anything that could release him from this nightmare. But the more he struggled, the more the shadows seemed to consume him, dragging him deeper into their grip.
Just as the ground beneath him seemed to crumble entirely, a figure appeared from the darkness. It was Professor Wei.
"Professor?" Wenyan breathed, barely able to believe his eyes. "How... how are you here?"
The professor, his once-dignified appearance now worn and haggard, looked at him with a solemn expression. "You have come too far, Wenyan," he said softly, his voice carrying a strange weight, as though it came from some far-off place. "You should not have sought the truth of the Nexus. You should have left it alone. Now, there is no going back."
Wenyan's heart skipped a beat. "What do you mean? You… you knew about all this? The Nexus, everything?"
Wei nodded, his eyes hollow. "I was part of it. Like you, like everyone before you. The Nexus is a force that cannot be controlled, cannot be understood. I tried to escape, tried to sever my ties to it, but it is inside all of us. You cannot outrun it."
Wenyan staggered back, overwhelmed by the weight of the revelation. "What… what do you want me to do?"
The professor's face softened, and he stepped closer. "There is nothing left to do, Wenyan. You must let go. You must accept it."
The world around Wenyan trembled, and the Nexus's whispers grew louder. It was closing in on him, pulling him deeper into its embrace.
"Let go," Wei repeated softly, the words echoing in his mind. "The Nexus has already claimed you. There is no fighting it. You are part of it now."
Wenyan's body trembled as the shadows engulfed him completely.
