The gym in Pewter City was overseen by Brock, a master of Rock-type Pokémon.
Known as "a man as strong as Rock," Brock prided himself on his unwavering willpower. Although Satoshi found the nickname somewhat amusing, it was a title respected by the citizens of Pewter City.
As a gym leader, Brock not only represented the city's strongest Trainer but was also tasked with protecting the city and guiding new Trainers. Along with these responsibilities came numerous benefits, which explained the grandeur of the gym building.
Every gym in the Pokémon world was a standout structure, often considered a city's iconic feature. Brock's gym was no exception, with its unique Rock-inspired design, wide-open spaces to accommodate battles, and safety measures to protect bystanders from any stray Pokémon attacks.
"So, the interior is tailored for Rock and Ground-types. In a way, gym leaders must be quite wealthy to afford these customizations. At least in this world, they're not short on resources," Satoshi muttered as he observed the gym's battle arena.
He thought back to the rules of the original game. Before facing the gym leader, challengers typically had to battle a few underlings.
"Too bad this gym doesn't follow those rules. In this game version, you face the leader directly unless there are too many challengers that day. If only I could battle the underlings for some extra experience and rewards."
Satoshi sighed but quickly shifted his focus back to the challenge ahead as Brock approached.
"Are you the rookie Trainer challenging the gym today? Welcome," Brock said, stepping onto the battlefield with his usual calm demeanor. "My name is Brock, the gym leader of Pewter City. I look forward to seeing your strength."
As always, Brock's eyes were tightly shut. Satoshi couldn't help but internally joke: What's the point of squinting if you're just going to close them completely? Are you pretending to be enlightened or training your inner vision?
Still, Satoshi maintained his polite exterior. "Hello, Mr. Brock, the gym leader of Pewter City. My name is Satoshi, and I'm the rookie Trainer here to challenge you today."
"Satoshi... Sato shi.?" Brock's expression grew serious as he carefully repeated the name.
Satoshi frowned slightly, sensing something unusual. "Yes, that's correct. Is there a problem? do you know my name?"
This wasn't the first time someone seemed to know him unexpectedly. He recalled Professor Oak recognizing his name earlier and giving him Charmander and the real Pokédex.
Gary had also been informed about him in advance. Now Brock, too, seemed familiar with his identity.
How could they know? I just started the game today, and even my username was created on a whim. What's going on?
"I wouldn't say I know you personally," Brock explained. "But someone mentioned your name to me. I didn't expect you to arrive in Pewter City so soon."
Brock's words left Satoshi both puzzled and intrigued.
"Who told you about me?" Satoshi began to ask, but Brock quickly interrupted.
"Wait a moment! I wasn't prepared for a battle just yet. Let me get ready. It'll only take a minute!" Brock suddenly blurted out, his face tinged with embarrassment. He then rushed back to the gym's lounge area.
Satoshi blinked in confusion. Prepared? What about the two Poké Balls on your waist? Aren't those your Pokémon?
As Satoshi waited, he mulled over the situation.
"This isn't adding up. When I entered the gym, I informed the staff I was here to challenge Brock. He should've been ready. And those two Poké Balls on his waist—what were those for if not for battling? Why would he run off like that?"
Moreover, the question of how Brock and Professor Oak knew his name lingered in his mind.
Professor Oak had gone out of his way to provide him with Charmander and the Pokédex, and Gary had been informed about him as well. Now Brock was acting strangely too.
Is there some kind of network among the notable figures in this world?
Satoshi narrowed his eyes. Do all the named characters in this world know about me?
"Forget it," Satoshi finally sighed. "Professor Oak didn't explain anything to me earlier, and Brock doesn't seem eager to clarify either. There must be a reason they're keeping things vague. I'll get my answers when the time is right. For now, I just need to focus on this battle."
He resolved to set aside his curiosity for the moment. After all, as long as he continued to grow stronger, the truth would eventually reveal itself.
