The Aurors appeared nearly 30 minutes after the attack was put down! Once again, they "popped" right in the middle of cleanup. Once again they were immediately targeted and told to surrender, and once again they popped back out. No one was injured or killed this time. Once again bedlam erupted in the Auror's office upon their immediate return, and once again Amelia Bones and Rufus Scrimgeour returned with another team of Aurors and Obliviators to the registered point of attack. The UAV operators notified command of the new group of "tangos" grouped at the train station. The Readiness Unit leader made his way there with his 2nd in Command and two SAS officers for backup. He relayed to them his last encounter with these people, and told them to beware any bolts of light coming from their sticks. He also told them that if they were attacked, to shoot to wound, not to kill, as they were supposedly a different form of police.
Upon meeting with Amelia and Rufus, the Readiness Unit leader told Amelia of his warning to his unit regarding any lights coming from any sticks – their orders were to shoot to kill (he on purpose overstated the orders in order to convey the seriousness his team took any forms of perceived attack). He warned Amelia to make sure her team stood down. Lastly, he took both Amelia and Rufus on a tour of the targets and the row of body-bagged terrorists. There were adult men, a few women, and several young men - Amelia and Rufus were able to identify each of them. A black skull tattoo was identified on each of their left forearms, including one on former Madam Umbridge.
It was 06:00 when the troops made it back to base. The Commander and Prime Minister had already been updated. Similarly, Minister Fudge had been updated, although his response was apoplectic! Minister Fudge demanded a meeting with the Prime Minister later that day.
At breakfast that morning, the Commander sent a Midshipman with a note to Midshipman Fenix, requesting him to appear in his office at 12 noon, dressed in Blues. When Fenix arrived at the office, the Readiness Unit Leader and the Prime Minister were present. The Commander introduced him as Midshipman "F", and as the source of information for the Goathland attack. Despite the "protection" of anonymity, Evan was extremely anxious of being introduced to the upper brass, and unintentionally and wandlessly cast a mild Notice Me Not and facial obscurity spell on himself. The Commander and Readiness Unit Leader debriefed the Prime Minister on the evening activities, none of whom were paying much attention to the Midshipman who happened to be standing "at ease" in the corner of the room.
After the Prime Minister left, the Commander took notice of Midshipman Fenix, and noticed his "blurred" facial features. "Midshipman Fenix", he began. "Have you ever heard the term 'wizard' before?" "No, Sir, Commander!", he replied, trying to not show any emotions on his face. "Well, with the attack on your parents, you have been exposed to them before," the Commander replied. "The term Wizard and Witch refer to people capable of performing actual magic. Not the entertainment kind, but G_ds truth, real magic. The people that attacked your family when you were young were wizards, I suspect; Evil ones at that. There is a whole other world, the 'Wizarding World', hidden amongst the non-magical world, our world. General Black. Do you notice anything strange about Midshipman Fenix right now?", he asked the Readiness Unit Leader.
"Yes, Commander", General Black responded. "It's hard to focus on him and his face seems blurred." The Commander then turned to Midshipman Fenix – "General Black and I are what are known as 'Squibs'. We both come from families capable of performing magic, but we ourselves cannot do any. It is perhaps happenstance, perhaps fate that put not only the General and I in the same base, but you as well. It would appear that you might be a wizard, Midshipman Fenix. Since our first meeting, I've asked some research be done on you and your family history in both the non-magical and magical world. We didn't find anything in the magical world. There is a lot of history in the non-magical world about your family, but not so much about you yourself.
We do have corroborating information about your childhood, and the entrance of your parents into the UK, your birth in Ayr, Scotland, but not much else. Care to explain?" asked the Commander. "Well, Commander", Midshipman Fenix responded, "after my parents were killed I was placed in an orphanage in Scotland. I was having trouble there with other kids, and so they transferred me to one near Surrey. I ended up having similar problems at the new orphanage, mostly older kids bullying me, but the Sisters didn't do anything! So, I ran away and have lived on the streets since." "How did you get by without any money?" the Commander asked.
"I found odd jobs, mostly. The first year was really hard. I found small change in the street, at playgrounds, and in phone booths. I was really hungry, dirty, and had dirty clothes until I met some other homeless kids. I tried asking for money from people, hoping they would take pity on me, but I found most people could care less for the homeless. Eventually I found I would get better responses if I was cleaned up some. I had to steal some clean clothes in the beginning. Later I learned that some churches would be willing to pay for some cheap labor, and I could get more clean clothes from them. With the help of the Vicars, I convinced some homeowners to give me a chance doing odd jobs at their home such as mow their lawn, paint the fence, or clean things up for them. Sometimes I would find some work cleaning stores or restaurants in exchange for some food. Sometimes I would find things in the trash that I could later sell on the street at flea markets." Fenix replied.
"I wasn't able to attend school, but I befriended a few kids my age. They told me what they were leaning in class and I did self-study in the library to try to keep pace." "Well, Midshipman Fenix, you may be what is called a 'muggle-born', a person capable of performing magic, but born to non-magical parents. The surprising thing is that you were not invited to any local magical schools." "Well, sir, I obviously had no mailbox. How would they send me a letter?", he responded.
"By owl, Midshipman. The Wizarding world uses owls to deliver mail", the Commander replied. On the fly, Evan decided now would be a good time to introduce his white feathery friend – "I don't recall an owl ever trying to deliver any letters to me, Sir. However, there has been a big, white Snowy Owl that hangs around me a lot. We've got to be friends. She has brought me the occasional mouse, rat, and even snake to eat when she thought I was hungry. I call her Hedwig, Sir. She is a right good listener, Sir. She has kept me sane on many a lonely night." "We can talk about that at another time, Midshipman. For now, we have to go to another meeting at 10 Downing. Dismissed, Midshipman."
