The trio pressed on, the oppressive energy of the Labyrinth growing heavier with each step. The air was thick with tension, and even the walls seemed to pulse with a malevolent rhythm, as if the Labyrinth itself were alive and aware of their movements.
Kael's grip on his sword tightened. He could feel the subtle pull of the Void growing stronger, its whispers clawing at the edge of his consciousness. He shook his head, pushing the thoughts aside. There was no room for hesitation now.
"Where's this leading us?" Caden asked, his voice echoing faintly in the dim corridor. His dual blades glinted faintly in the soft, eerie glow emanating from the walls.
"Deeper," Seris replied curtly. Her expression was focused, her hands glowing faintly with protective runes. "We've passed the outer trials. This next phase… it's testing our minds, not just our strength."
Kael frowned. "Testing our minds how?"
As if in answer, the corridor abruptly widened into a cavernous chamber. The ground beneath them shifted, fracturing into jagged, uneven platforms suspended over a chasm of swirling darkness. The air smelled of iron and decay, and the faint sound of distant screams echoed from below.
"Well," Caden muttered, stepping closer to the edge. "This looks inviting."

The Test of Unity
A sudden, deafening roar shook the chamber, and massive stone pillars began to rise from the depths of the chasm. Atop each pillar, glowing runes flickered to life, their light casting eerie shadows across the chamber.
From the darkness, a disembodied voice boomed:
"Only those who walk as one may proceed. Stray, and the abyss will claim you."
"Walk as one?" Kael repeated, his eyes narrowing.
Seris stepped forward, examining the runes on the nearest pillar. "It's a balance test," she said, her voice steady but tinged with unease. "The pillars are connected by an invisible thread. If we're not perfectly in sync, the path will collapse."
Caden let out a low whistle. "Great. And here I thought I left my coordination skills back at the tavern."
Kael shot him a look. "Focus. One misstep, and we're all dead."
The trio stepped cautiously onto the first platform, feeling the faint tremor beneath their feet. As they moved, the runes on the next pillar began to shift, forming a new pattern.
Seris's eyes narrowed. "The runes are a guide. Follow their rhythm, and we stay balanced."
They moved together, each step carefully measured. The platform beneath them shuddered, but the path ahead remained stable.
"Don't stop," Kael said, his voice low and steady.
But as they reached the third platform, the whispers returned.
---
Voices from the Abyss
The voices were louder this time, echoing up from the chasm below. Each voice was distinct, familiar, and taunting.
"Kael… you'll never escape your guilt."
"Seris, you're a liar. They'll see through you."
"Caden, you're a failure. They don't need you."
The whispers grew stronger, weaving a web of doubt around them. Seris faltered, her step wavering. The platform beneath them groaned, tilting dangerously.
"Seris!" Kael barked, grabbing her arm.
"I'm fine," she snapped, shaking him off. But her expression betrayed her. The whispers had struck a nerve.
The trio steadied themselves, but the voices didn't relent. Instead, they grew more insidious, twisting their deepest fears into cruel mockery.

The First Fall
"Kael…"
The voice was soft, but unmistakable.
It was her voice.
He froze mid-step, his breath catching in his throat. The others didn't notice at first, but the platform beneath them shuddered violently.
"Kael, what are you doing?" Caden hissed, his balance faltering.
Kael's eyes darted to the edge of the chasm. For a brief moment, he saw her. Talia. Standing there, her silver hair glowing faintly in the darkness. She reached out to him, her eyes pleading.
"Help me…"
Kael's grip on his sword loosened, his mind clouded by the weight of his memories. He took an unconscious step forward.
"KAEL!" Seris's voice snapped him out of his trance, and he stumbled back just as the platform tilted violently.
The shockwave sent Caden over the edge, his shout echoing through the chamber.
"Caden!" Kael lunged, grabbing his arm just in time. Caden dangled precariously over the abyss, his blades slipping from his grip and vanishing into the darkness below.
"Pull me up, damn it!" Caden shouted, panic lacing his voice.
Kael gritted his teeth, his muscles straining as he hauled Caden back onto the platform. The moment Caden was safe, the platform stabilized, but the whispers only grew louder.
"We need to move!" Seris shouted, her voice barely audible over the cacophony.

The Final Pillar
The trio pushed forward, each step more grueling than the last. The whispers clawed at their minds, dredging up old wounds and insecurities. By the time they reached the final pillar, their resolve was hanging by a thread.
Seris collapsed to her knees, her breaths ragged. "This place… it's not just testing us. It's breaking us."
Kael placed a hand on her shoulder, his own exhaustion evident. "We're almost through. One more step."
The final platform was different. Its runes glowed brighter, pulsing in sync with the whispers. As they stepped onto it, the disembodied voice returned.
"One must remain."
"What?" Caden spat, his eyes wide.
The voice repeated, cold and unyielding: "One must remain. Sacrifice ensures passage."
Kael's stomach twisted. He glanced at Seris and Caden. Both looked equally horrified.
"No," Seris said firmly. "There has to be another way."
"There isn't," Kael said quietly, his gaze hardening. He stepped forward, gripping his sword.
"Kael, don't—" Caden began, but Kael silenced him with a look.
"I'll stay," Kael said, his voice steady despite the chaos inside him.
"No," Seris said again, grabbing his arm. "We're not leaving you."
Kael turned to her, his expression unreadable. "There's no time to argue. Get through the gate. I'll find another way out."
Before either of them could protest further, Kael slammed the hilt of his sword into the platform, triggering the runes. The final path opened, and a bright light engulfed the chamber.
Seris and Caden were pulled forward, their shouts fading into the light.
Kael turned back to face the chasm, the whispers now a deafening roar.
"Let's see what you've got," he muttered, raising his sword as the shadows closed in.
