Liam fell forward through the gaping maw of the portal onto new ground. Before him loomed a castle, its stone walls weathered and jagged against a stormy sky. It was surrounded on all sides by the endless expanse of a barren island—no greenery, no life, only wind-blown ash and jagged rocks.
A group of rather dwarf-like figures was stationed at the gate, all wearing crude armor and wielding formidable weapons. Their faces revealed lines and deep furrows of age and battle, but their eyes gleamed with fierce red determination. One of the dwarves, a thick and muscular warrior with a braided beard and a hammer hanging from his back, grunted."Another one, eh? Hope your spirits are high, stranger."Liam was confused. He moved closer. "For what?"Pointed his finger at the horizon, where a dark rumbling storm had come up. "For them."The Challenge is Laid Before Him.Liam quickly discovered that there was one thing that awaited him: to defend a castle for seven days. It was rumored that they would guard the treasure, Hammer of the King of Dwarves, which could "empower anything it touched"-armor, weapons, even structures. However, a treasure such as this has a greater pull for hordes of monsters. They came in relentless waves, their howls echoing into nothingness across the barren island as the dwarves prepared for war.Days 1-3: The first waves hit very hard. During the first three days, Liam swung his sword with the dwarves until he burned his arms and drank down all his potions. The monsters; twisted hulking creatures with bright glowing eyes and gnarled claws, poured endlessly forth. Blood painted the stones of the castle walls, while weariness pressed on him. Nyx, ever nearby, was darting among foes, using disillusion to displace the beasts. He slumped against a wall, breathless, bruised, and empty. Supplies all gone, the walls were beginning to crack against the siege."Not going to happen," Liam said, throatily. The Hammer's SecretLiam reached the dwarves after four days of desperation. "We aren't gonna last. I need something—anything—to turn it around. Can I... can I use the hammer?"The dwarf at the head blinked. "Aye, lad. Ye can use it anytime ye want."Liam was petrified. "What?! Why didn't you tell me that before?"The dwarves erupted into great laughter. "You didn't ask!" one of them bellowed, patting his knee.Liam groaned. "Unbelievable."Improving the WeaponsLed to the innermost chamber of the castle, here was the Hammer of the King of Dwarves. Great, wheel-high and decorated by fine carvings, this somehow glowed in its golden light. The very air around it hummed with energy."Alright, let's see what you can do," Liam muttered. He put his sword under the hammer's blow. It left the hammer infected with radiant light, sharper than before and strengthened by the blow, the blade engulfed by radiant light. His armor gleamed, absorbing the magic of the hammer, strengthening this metal and glowing faintly with protective runes.Nyx stood by him, cocking his head sideways. Liam grinned and set to forging sleek black armor for his buddy, complete with a lining of gold trim and protective spells. Nyx barked with pride, as this was indeed a good fit for a growing warrior. The Final Wave ApproachesDays have passed, and now, Liam is fighting with newfound strength. His once inferior sword is now able to cleave through monsters easily, but most importantly, his armor protects him against their fiercest blows, and Nyx is deadlier than ever, faster, and more protected than before. The dwarves rallied behind Liam, their spirits renewed watching him turn the battle tide. The waves grew stronger, fiercer, but not Liam. On the seventh day, storm clouds blackened the heavens above the island, swirling ominously.A new notification appeared before him:Final Wave: The Commander Approaches. Prepare for battle.Liam lowered his sword, sweat dripping from his brow and turned to face where the massive silhouette was rising on the horizon. "So... this is it," he murmured tightening his grip around the blade.Nyx stood tall at his side, growling his golden-trimmed armor shimmered in the dappled light. As the ground beneath their feet began to shake, Liam turned to the dwarves and nodded. "Shall we end this?"And it ends with Liam, Nyx, and dwarf warriors preparing to face the final challenge - the Monster Commander. To be continue...
