As these thoughts raced through my mind, I carefully controlled my breathing, making sure not to make a sound that could alert anyone to my presence.
"Just be careful, hope... didn't you say he'd be gone for several days?" As I pondered, a man's voice finally broke the silence in the living room.
I couldn't help but look up, only to see Betty perched atop a man, using him as her human chair.
"Who knows... I can't be sure..." Betty's voice followed shortly, breathy from what seemed like a recent return from an outing.
Her breathing was still uneven.
Betty was still dressed in her work clothes from school.
Had they gone out right after she finished work?
But what about the two pairs of slippers at the door?
And was this man the same one from the small courtyard?
The door and the noise of the nightlife outside muffled their voices, making it hard to discern the tone of their conversation.
