The Day of the Exam

At the time old man Shen was done speaking, tears drew a line on his cheeks without him noticing, drinking his beer as though nothing happened. One would think he was leisurely telling a heartbreaking story to kill time.

Zhi Luan wasn’t a stranger to emotions; he wasn’t a rock. He too had experienced the loss of family and understood how painful it could be, albeit a long time ago. Memories of it still lingered in his mind, occasionally resurfacing. Whenever they did, Zhi Luan always indulged in those memories.

No words of consolation were said, nor were they needed. The two drank in silence for a long time, before old man Shen spoke up again.

“Drinking like this was a luxury I had no time for. But because of you, I can sit back and relax like this. I’ve never been sure if you’re a blessing or problem, but not anymore.”

He then got up and smiled at Zhi Luan,

“Don’t stay up too late,” he said and went to retire for the night.
