The forest canopy allowed moonlight to create several silver streamers across the ground while Anita and Jace kept walking. The heavy silence between them carried more pressure than just danger because both were resisting an unnamed attraction.

Jace studied Anita when he noticed her uncommon reserve. His moonlit tails gently moved behind him while he walked.

Anita answered in a quick and sharp tone when she replied “I’m thinking.”

“About?”

She briefly stopped walking as she paused for a moment. “About what the fox said. About the darkness consuming us. About why I’m even here.”

Jace slowed, his expression softening. People come here because they possess the courage to exist. Not every person would confront such a situation directly.

Anita produced a dry sound which clearly lacked any sense of humor. “Brave? I am pushing through everything blindly because I hope it will turn out well.
