Jace collapsed to one knee, his glow flickering dangerously. The fox bead at his chest dimmed, and for the first time, he looked fragile—mortal.
Anita’s heart clenched. She rushed to his side, her hands hovering over him in panic. "Jace! Stay with me!"
He let out a weak chuckle, though it lacked his usual cocky edge. "You look like you’re about to cry," he murmured. "Didn’t know you cared this much."
Her chest tightened. She wanted to snap at him, tell him not to joke at a time like this, but the words wouldn't come. Instead, she pressed her lips together, forcing herself to focus. "Of course, I care," she admitted, barely above a whisper.
His golden eyes softened for a fleeting moment before he winced. The glow of his tails flickered again, dangerously close to vanishing completely.
